As someone in their first year in IPSC, I am certainly seeing the benefit of having a shot timer not only for practice, but to have one to lend out at matches if something were to happen.
I have seen a ton of the R U Ready speed timer, a few of the CED7000, 1 CED8000, 1 pact timer and heard great things about the DAA SHOTMAXX watch style.
The ced8000 looks quite more advanced than I need, the pact timer sounded funny to me. The benefit of the shotmaxx is that I can use it at the indoor range that is my only source of live fire practice, but think if I were ever to take the RO course I would have to buy a new unit. I am a pretty budgeted shooter this year as I am also a student, so I thought I would ask you nice folks, which would you buy?

I have the Shotmaxx watch....it is very versatile. Great for practice....don't know that I would use it for ROing duties.
Also have an RU Ready timer, had it for 7 years, bread and butter timer for ROing matches, very limited in its functions!

I've had multiple RU ready timers...they have all sucked.

Maybe you just weren't ready....

Does anyone with the technical mojo have an opinion on tge various phone app timers out there.
I installed one on my android phone.... seems to work, but no way to tell how accurate it is

if i was buying a CED it would be the 8000 (which i have) because it has a nice big screen and uses 9 volt batterieds and i can clip it to my side pocket for use.

The 7000 uses a rechargeable battery that is of course never charged when you want to go to the range. they do have a battery pack for it that works so so. the other problem is the screen is small hard to read and impossible to read if you have polarized Glasses.

The RUReady times are nice simple timers that will cover the needs for most people for training purposes. The blet clip does break easily.

The pact is a nice timers since you can buy a chrono with it. decent size numbers to read and a lot of functions on it.

Got 'em all, CED Little one, CED one that can score matches, PACT and Shotmaxx. The gadgets and flashy stuff is nifty, but the novelty wears off.
In the end, I'm still pulling the yellow one (RU Ready) out of the bag.

I have the shotmaxx and love it for practice. No need to worry about others shooters being there and picking up their shots. Simple to use and all the functions you need. The shot max would be the one I recommend for practice, not so much for RO'ing a match though.

PACT MkIV if you want to get serious about practice.

The R U Ready timers are only any good for ROing and they crap out eventually. They are not really meant for practice.

The ShotMaxx and CED are both good timers... I'd really only bother with the ShotMaxx if you are shooting a lot on a shared firing line and don't want to pick up anyone else's shots. Otherwise it's a bit of a pain to mess with par times on it.

I have the RU Ready and Shotmaxx. The big huge Pact is on my list as I like the features. I've sent my RU Ready in for repair twice. I rarely use my Shotmaxx. Just more convinient to use the RU ready. That said, if I only had any of the three I'd get by.

I've got the RU Ready and am satisfied with it, and would buy again. I went that route because its Canadian made (and locally for me) and its the timer I saw at every match I've been at as well as all the guys at our club have them. Its fairly simple to use, very loud and compact (I've seen other timers on videos that are huge). Only drawback I see it is sometimes pics up echos indoors and records a second time 0.08 after the shot. Which makes my split times look good. LOL. I suspect I could adjust the sensitivity and correct this though, as we shoot several matches indoors and the RO's have never reported this problem.

I tried a timer app for my i-phone (forget which one) and found it wasn't picking up all the shots.

I've tried most of them too. For practice on my own, the Shotmaxx is hard to beat. You can practice right next to someone else and only record your times. It can pick up airsoft for practice and often even dry fire. You would not want to use it for a match as you can't really hand it to someone else.

If you are RO'ing a match outdoors, anything will work just fine if it beeps and picks up the shots. If you are indoors, you want something that has a filter for echos and a sensitivity adjustment. Otherwise, you are going to pick up echos, miss shots etc.

The fancier timers just have more features, larger screens, built in memories for strings etc. You may or may not want or need those. We sell the CED timers which work great.

I had a PACT MKIV timer before, It has a TON of features including the ability to be a Chronograph but the service was not great and it had a terrible flaw that it would start to become unresponsive as the memory filled up. PACT is aware of that and never did anything to correct it. It is also HUGE to be carrying on your belt. The sensitivity adjustment required taking it apart or putting tape over the microphone. It has great potential but other factors pushed me away from selling them.
