Which SIG P226 in 9 mm to buy for IPSC?

Assuming competing in Production Division....
Pockets full of cash option - X5 all-round
Pockets not-so-full of cash option - Stainless with a short reset trigger (the Elite?)
Pockets empty - CZ shadow
Pockets full of bills - Glock 17 - M&P9 - STI GP6...
:D

I would say definately something with the SRT. You can train yourself to get used to just about anything, but - as much as I love classic SIGs - the trigger reset on the normal DA/SA SIGs provides a competitive disadvantage to the user.

Other than that, I say go for it if that is what you want. The first shot DA thing is not that big a deal in my mind. It is pretty easy to develop that skill. SIGs are nice guns. I have a 228, two 229s and a 239. Only the 239 has SRT. I wish I could get the parts to convert at least one of the others to SRT.

I'm interested to try the SAO SIG trigger, but I haven't had the opportunity yet.

I was looking at the 226 Blackwater tactical.

I couldn't find the X5 on Questars web site.

Yes, for production division.

That would have been my advice and I have owned all of those.

X5's are listed... use the Category links on left side... select Handguns then SIG Sauer then XFIVE (last in the list)

Home --> Categories --> Firearms - Handguns --> SIG Sauer --> XFive

Right now we have 2 of the 226X5-9-Tactical in stock and on sale. They are very nice... SAO... sweet guns. Here's the link...

My personal favorite (especially for production) would be the 229R-9-DSE-TB...

IPSC Choice

After much research and after trying a number of SIGs by renting while in Texas, I chose and bought the X-Five Allround as I wanted to maximize my options. The X-five was the gun that I took my Black Badge with and the one with which I first tried BullsEye which worked out well because the gun is awesomely accurate. I also dressed mine up with NILL extended grips and bought an aluminum magwell extension both of which give me the "L1" look and feel. The NILL flared grips have a very comfortable feel for me and so I use those for BullsEye and for when I just want my gun to look great. The aluminum flare extension took some careful modifications to the standard plastic grips that came with the gun. I've ordered standard NILLS as well without the extended flare. I am on my way to Arizona and may send this gun to Bruce Gray for a package of his magic. That will include shortening the reset in his own way and polish fitting everything that moves. That will add another $700 to the value of this gun but according to Gray will turn the X-five into the fastest gun on the range.

While you didn't say, if you want to shoot production, the gun must be on the approved list. With all the models and variations it could be a little confusing. If in doubt, I would check with IPSC. While the P-226 Elite is listed, the threaded barrel version isn't specifically. I'm not even close to being expert as I just got started myself but it is worth checking rather than be sorry. Get someone to explain the IPSC classification system for you as it does affect scoring. I chose 40 cal to be sure of being ranked as "major". I shoot IPSC for fun and doubt if I will ever be competitive but details count if you want to keep your options open.

USPSA Sigs

That may be a good choice for you if you know you are going to need a few mags and the gun otherwise suits you. I think many SIGs are shipping with just one now. If you plan to shoot IPSC, five mags is a good number. I found it to be a chore finding 10 round mags at the right price. I finally did get what I need but it took some effort and I had to take my Black Badge with less than the ideal which added to the difficulty as I had to spend so much time recharging mags. It's easy to use four shooting a course of fire in IPSC and having a fifth is good.
