Which Single-shot rifle would you choose?

Should see all the old accounts on big & nasty game that folks took with the 22 Savage Hi Power. Put a good pill in the right spot & nice results will normally happen. ;)

I know, you're preaching to the choir. But the 22 CF for deer is a staple topic, I'm sure a 22 CF for bear thread would have lots of fireworks. I know a guy who took a grizzly with a 22-250 around 1990, and a guy that used a 22WMR on grizzly, elk, and black bear in the 60's. I've taken deer with the 22-250 and the Hornet, the 22-250 drops them like they were hit by lightning.

I have a difficult time to justify the Hagn action when the B. Searcy is almost identical for less than half the price. I should of purchased one action when Ralf and Martin built me one rifle and restored an old 1901 L.C. (Elsie) Smith. They were half the price about 12-15 years ago. After reading many great reviews on the K95 and K1,2,3 I'm leaning towards these two, most particular, the K95. If I build, it will be either the B. Searcy or Ruger #1. Will have Chris Greisbach build it. BTW, who built your rifles?

Searcy also offers it stainless if that floats your boat.
One thing I will mention is a lot of these custom actions only have a extractor not a ejector and that’s hard for me to swallow on a single shot.

No worries there. I bonked more deer back in the day with me .22 LR Cooey 39 than any of me centerfires.

I like Nosler's 64 gr Bonded Solid Base bullet; perhaps I should leave the big guns at home and start packing my .223; that CZ 527 is a bunch nicer to carry than a Brno 602, a M-70 Winchester Express, or a 590 Mossberg, and what's the worse that could happen??!! It would almost be worth it to see the look on Pounder's face showing up to bear guard with that little rifle slung over my shoulder.

Anyway, as to single shot rifles, I like em all, but if I had to choose today, I'd take let nostalgia lead the way and take a hard look at a Sharps or a Remington Rolling Block.

Sounds like you need an SKS.

I just think a "Single Shot 22CF for Bear" would be a good thread.

I own a Browning B78. I like the exposed hammer and half #### option. Stripping the action down is not for the faint of heart though. You need an extra thumb and finger to reassemble,

My favorite in the looks dept is a Hepburn, but, good ones are hard to come by, and not cheap, and they are not a real strong action. And I'd still like to have a Stevens 44-1/2 with a set trigger from CPA, the 32-40 would be quite adequate for my purposes, this one wouldn't be for hunting.

The only single shot rifle I have at the moment is a h&r .44 mag. I bought it without too many details thinking it would be a super Handy lightweight rifle with a bit of thump to it. Turns out some dumb bastard at H&R thought it was a good idea to use up 20 gauge blanks and bore a .429” hole instead of the normal .615” hole. What you get is some weird bastard heavy barrel target rifle in a cartridge never meant for actual target shooting. I’ve been thinking of lathing a pound or two off of it. I was just confused when I unpacked it.

Ruger #1 in whatever calibre you like best..... I have used a .270 Win for more than twenty years... and the discipline inherent in knowing you have 1 shot makes for a good hunting experience. That being said, I would consider the Thompson Centre switch barrel rifle to be a desirable second choice simply because of the available calibres.

we gave my Ruger 1 a good run this past weekend!
we took it spotlightign while i had some motorcycle friend down from the city , gave him the 303 to shoot a few deer for some easy paddock meat.
he missed a ripper bull stag first night which was a good outome in the end, for me ! im agains trophy shooting in the night but for meat its ok.

then i give him more practise inthe day an we went again, we got a nice hind sambar for meat an the 303 put one down well enough.

good to see it being used...got to do more myself, keen now

I just bought a #1B Ruger from a gunnut on here. It was originally a 30-06, but is
now in my favorite big 30, the 308 Norma Magnum.
Have not had time to wring it out yet, but even factory loads were shooting around
moa, so potential is there.
Love the exquisite form of the Martini/Hagn rifles, but out of reach for me, unfortunately. :(

One of the more 'storied' members on here contributed a snippet I vaguely recall...." Life is too short to shoot boring rifles"
And I'll surely enrage at least several members, but hey...Graveyard shift can be boring.
H & R and TC singles are...well...lacking Panache ( love that word, sometimes the French get it right :) ).

Want to try my T/C Katahdin Prohunter in 45-70 with 550gr Crater's @ 1600fps it will give you some Panache...

Big recoil isn't Panache, it's just recoil IMO. I'm pretty sure a 12 ga break open truck gun with brisk loads kicks pretty close. Been there and done that...recoil doesn't really bother me. Ran 80 rds through an M44 STAT ( like cosmoline oozing from the handguard fast) a couple years back...just to prove a point. Slight freckling on my shoulder.
MEH.
Most folks are pussies about recoil.
Annnnd sunk the hook in, LOL

I've always liked the Heeren action single shot rifles.

Beautiful rifle...

That is my idea of a perfect "stalking rifle," you creep in silently, under the canopy of an ancient forest with that rifle under your arm, slowly kneel down, raise the rifle to your shoulder and make a single well placed shot and then sit down in the forest, lean back against an expansive beech tree and take in the sights and sounds.
