What single shot rifle action would you choose for big game hunting?

1) Hinge/break action
2) Falling block action

You might want to talk about what uses you are thinking about and why you want a single shot.

Personally I would like something nice from C Sharps (hxxp://csharpsarms.com/catalog.php) or CPA (hxxps://www.cparifles.com). A Stevens, Hepburn or 1885 in the high end market that they build for are amazing.

If you want a break down survival gun to throw under the truck seat you might want to look other places...
 
I have 4 H&R break action rifles. They are both lighter and more affordable than the typical falling block rifles (Ruger number 1). I have shot a Ruger number 1 in 22-250, and it was a very nice rifle and quite accurate as well. The falling block action is significantly stronger than the break action, so that may be a deciding factor depending on the cartridge you are looking at and how hard you want to push it. For example in 45-70 a Ruger number one can be loaded to higher pressures and velocities than a break action. If weight and cost are not a factor, the falling block action is definitely a superior design.

Hagn, hands down, plus fully made in Canada. Closed second Ruger, both falling blocks.

If the trigger had been better or easier to improve I'd almost agree with a Medvedqc, I really wanted to like the little rifle I had.
The switch barrel feature of the various European Kipplauf(not to mention visual appeal) the as well as TC and CVA have a certain appeal. Make mine a rolling block, preferably a No.1 stainless laminate.
 
For a falling block - a Winchester 1885 High Wall without question. Better balance than a Ruger (at least for me - better being a
Subjective measurement), on center hammer design is less prone to issues than a sharps, no mechanical safety, easy to walk around with a round in the chamber and the hammer on half-#### (I have had the Ruger tang safety snag and come off safe on several occasions and I don't trust that design).

For a break barrel - a kipplauf. The tilting block design fixes all of the flaws apparent in a simple break barrel (stronger and more rigid lock up), reasonable return to zero after disassembly/takedown (my Jaeger 9 is within 1.5-2" @100 yds when I tested it by firing three shot strings and taking it down completely between rounds - not perfect but not bad either), the decocker allows you to keep a round chambered and safe without a hammer block or other mechanical safety, balances perfectly and the set trigger on mine is a nice bonus.

I would like to use a Martini-Henry but I'm not trying very hard to make that happen. Ruger's No.1 seems a rifle I would like, too, but not enough to pay the price, even when they made some in .303British, a favourite cartidge for me. I have chosen Handi-Rifles and I like them enough to keep using them.

Sweet!! The only single shot I have at the moment is one I picked up to replace a Ruger #1 in 22-250 I gave my Son. I replaced it with an old custom Winchester high wall, chambered in 219 Donaldson Wasp and sporting a 10X J.UNERTL scope. It LOVES 50gr Hornady V-MAX:d:d.
