Which SKS?

I noticed Chinese SKS going for $189 at Marstar, as well as a local gun store selling a used Russian SKS for $199.

Just out of curiosity which one seems like a better deal? I would assume the Russian one is of higher quality, but seeing as it is used is it it better to buy new(er) one from Marstar?

How much is the shipping from Marstar? The Chinese will probably be a new old stock unissued, and the Russian might be a refurb. Tough call. Get both.

^Could you go into more detail as to your reasons why? This is more of a learning exercise for me to learn about firearms, SKS just happened to not only be convenient to compare but a possible future purchase as well.

Thanks!

It doesn`t matter which one you get. They are equally fun and probably equally accurate with surplus ammo. The russian is the original and if you can handle it and like how it looks - buy it. No waiting for shipping or having to deal with potential damage from transit.

Just my 2 cents.

If you want a new rifle get one of the Chinese from Marstar or other places that are offering free shipping. If you don't mind used refurb's then Russians's are an option. Both are under the $200.00 mark, no need to pay more. You can not go wrong with either one, It's all cosmetic.

I own a Chinese SKS and love it! It has never misfired on military ammo, and a joy to shoot. Little recoil, you can shoot rounds all day with it.

If you plan on doing alot of shooting and don't care about anything else other than shooting and you might buy some Tapco furniture down the road, then the Chinese gun is the way to go in my opinion. If you care a bit more about the authentic nature of the gun, and plan on telling a brief story about the gun everytime you show someone the rifle then get the older Russian. If the Russian gun is built 1952 or newer then it should be a chrome lined barrel, just like the Chinese gun, so there is'nt much difference in the gun. The Russians usually seem better built and fit and finish, but the Chinese will feel more like a new gun.

If the Russian SKS is 1949 or 1950 then in will likely have a spring loaded firing pin, and that is a sought after option in the gun, that they stopped doing for some reason halfway through 1950. The trade off is that your rifle won't likely have a chrome lined barrel.

For some reason they did'nt make a Russian SKS with spring loaded firing pin and chrome lined barrel. Thats too bad, because that would of been the shizzle. For the best of both worlds, you can buy a Later Russian SKS with chrome lined barrel, and get a spring loaded firing pin kit from the aftermarket.

well, the SKS was never a cheap gun to build, getting rid of the pin which they felt was unneccessary for surplus ammo was for cost saving.

ofcos the chinese took the cost savings to whole new level.

spring loaded firing pins are not necessary if you just clean the damn thing. I'd personally go local russian, even the refurbs are nice. The wood on the chinese military is nowhere near as good as russian birch or laminate. Inside they are all rock solid and reliable. Pretty much your choice is between spike bayonet with cheaper wood, or blade bayonet with nicer wood. Shipping my SKS from Marstar in ontario to alberta was almost 50 bucks, after taking it out of the box I wished I'd got a local '54 tula for $230. Not the same quality as the older chinese military SKS that I never should have sold :( does anyone know how the russians finished their bolts and bayonets? are they chromed or just polished?

They are polished.

Get the Chinese from Marstar they are brand new and never fired, i bought the Marstar Rifle and i love it!! I bought a Russian Refurb last summer and i ended up selling it... it was a nice Rifle but the barrel was completely worn out and it looked like a shotgun bore inside.

:eek:....How much did you sell your enemigo that rifle for? {note to self...don't buy anything from Fender45 from Halifax:D}

:D......i guess that didn't sound good did it..A friend of mine bought it for a plinker so he knew about the barrel i ended up selling it for 170.00 still a good Rifle i just like the idea of having a new unfired SKS. Here is what i have now the two Chinese twins....

Well not only Id go for the russian one, but I'd also be glad to be able to locally inspect it. Especially the barrel & markings/numbers.
