Which slug is more deadly???

I can't seem to figure this out...

Which would be more ideal for stopping a raging animal:

(ONLY these two slugs are being compared here - nothing else).

*Both are 3"

1) 1 oz slug @ 1760 fps

or

2) 1¼ oz slug @ 1600 fps


The lighter faster slug or the heavier slower one???

They'll both do the job, but methinks the 1.25oz moving at 1600fps would do it a bit better. Also what kind of animal are we talking? A raging squirrel isn't really comparable to a raging grizzly.

Either of those will subdue the bear in fairly short order, given a boiler room shot.

I'd rather have a bear defense thread. There is no way of proving which is better, a lot would depend on which part of the animal you hit, which is fairly random.

I've shot deer with a slug --the 1760...I don't think it matters which one you use...a good hit with any slug and its pretty much game over...use both...the 1760 would be more accurate because of the faster speed ....but the 11/4 ounce is significantly heavier.....what kind of shotgun are you using???

First I should point out that few factory loaded slugs live up to their advertised velocity. When it comes to the actual terminal effect on a live target, the structure of the slug is more important than the velocity. Chances are the slug will travel between 10 and 100 yards before striking the target unless it is a defensive shooting situation. On deer sized game, any slug will perform pretty well, provided it hits were it needs to. The accuracy you can squeeze out of your ammo, gun combination will dictate your maximum range. Fired from a smooth bore barrel, the Brenneke slug is superior to the foster mostly due to superior penetration and less deformation, but this is of little importance on deer sized game. The Challenger slug it sort of a hybrid between the foster and the Brenneke. They have worked OK in any gun I've fired them from, but there have been enough complaints about them here to make their accuracy questionable until you've tried them. If your needs are defensive or for game larger than deer, choose the Brenneke.

I usually do use the Brenneke 1³⁄₈ oz rifled slugs, but I just wanted extra rounds in my pocket just in case.

I only brought this up because we almost got attacked by a big black bear (w/ her cubs) yesterday while in the bush, and all I had was the 2¾" rifled slugs. I felt impotent for some reason, and mad at myself for leaving the Brenneke slugs at home
The smaller slugs just didn't reassure me as much as I'd like.

The "smaller" slugs? Jebus man....you are still talking about an ounce of lead with a 1/2" frontal area......

That's like saying: Whats gonna be worse to have a head-on with while driving my smartcar: A loaded semi doing 60 MPH or an empty one doing 80? Either way, you aren't walking away.

2 3/4", 3", 3 1/2" uber-magnum.....at bear defence ranges, it won't make a lick of difference. Some would argue (me for instance) that a 2 3/4" 1 oz load would be superior due to faster recovery for multiple shots.

You have got to be kidding me.
Ever tried firing 5x3" magnums as fast as you can? Not a very pleasant experience.
2 3/4 are more than enough to take almost anything down.

I was thinking the same thing. As far as the OP two rounds go, I don't think it would make a difference anyway you look at it. May I suggest porting and a muzzle break?

Why: 12ga hole at speeds over 1500 fps and the weight wouldn't matter....
