I purchesed a Marlin XS7 in 308 for my 12 year old son last year. Paid under $400 taxes in from Epps. At this price point, not a bad rifle at all. Accurate out of the box.
Everyone has a budget as to what they want to spend. High end rifle, i'd pick Sako/Tika/Weatherby rifles. Mid range rifle, Browning/Remington/Winchester/Ruger/CZ rifles. Low end rifles Marlin/Stevens rifle. I my self own Sako/Remington/Ruger/Marlin rifles all in 308 calibre & one in 338LM in Sako. They all shoot well, it all comes down to whats your budget. FYI the Marlin i purchesed for my son, came from Marlin & not from Remington.

I voted Featherlight. I picked up my first rifle last year; a Savage Weather Warrior in .243. I like the stainless barrel, but don't care for the Tupperware stock. Now I'd like to add a long action to my collection with wood stock and blued barrel, and what is nicer in a mid-level rifle than the Featherweight? Love the engraving and Schnabel fore end.

You didn't specify which Weatherby, so I'd recommend the Vangard Sub-MOA; but in .25-'06 rather than the .257 Wby, for better accuracy, cheaper (or far better) brass and slightly better barrel life.

I voted other, because I have 8 sub-30 cal hunting rifles, and don't own any of those particular rifles, so I obviously think other options are more appealing. Quite frankly if I were in your shoes I'd either get something in 280 or in 6.5x55. I'd probably get a 280 in a Remington mtn lss. However the suggestion of a Tikka in 270wsm is a really good one too.

I would dig a Model 70 in .257 Roberts, but I don't think they offer that combination at present. Nor do they offer it in 25-06.

I'd also go win 70. I know where there is one in .257 Roberts. Pm me if you want the info.

if it's an older Model 70 Featherweight in 257 Roberts, don't touch it! the accuracy in that combo, just isn't there! Google: Ed Matunas (last name prolly not spelled correctly here). Author of many good books, firearms and ammo expert.

the info is in one of his books, I just forget which one it is, I do have that book, but where is it now?

Thanks for all the replies, If it happens pending sellings some stuff and clearing up some other debts first. I have decided on the new Weatherby Vanguard S2 stainless steel in .257 WBY

Good choice, hopefully you handload as ammo will become expensive to buy factory loads. I would suggest a 25-06 in the vanguard. Not as fast as the wby, but still a great little cartridge. Also to point out, 25-06's seem to require a 24" barrel which makes the vanguard a good choice.

I would pick a M70 sporter in 25-06. Saw it listed in their 2011 catalog. Great gun and cartridge for small to medium game.

6.5x300wsm (being built)
25-06Ai (just got from being built)
25-08 souper ackley improved (I want one so badly)
25wssm
22-250 ackley improved on a gain to 7 twist....for long range coyote whacking.

Just sold a 257bee. 9grains more powder than my 25-06ackley to gain 8 fps over the ackley...bad thing was - I turned a 25-06Ai into a 257roy expecting more gain than 8fps with 9 more grains of powder. Friggin brass so very expensive too....
