My personal opinion is that the Herman target is the best of the bunch for one very simple reason that I learned at my various rifle shoots at CFB Borden...

There is a clear and defined aiming point on Herman to concentrate on when shooting for score, and that happens to be the white on the back of his wrist.

All the other targets have smaller, oddly shaped, and off center aiming points. They look like fun targets as is, but with a small tweak, #1 could be very servicable and a good update to good ol' herman.

#2 looks too cluttered and would not show up as well with irons.

For the record, I don't like #3 much, as it reminds me strongly of Counter-terror/ SWAT type forces, ie shooting the good guys. (edit, noticed this has been noted before me as well.)

WHAT?!? No clowns?! You KNOW they're coming for you!

If you study the figure 11 or 12 you quickly see that there is a set size of paper to work with and the scoring demarcation projected inwards on the whole silhouette. It's primary function as a model is for center of mass shooting. In reality, the graphic of the silhouette itself is meaningless. The chin and wrist were drawn in such fashion to give visual reference at close range, but further out (remember they were implemented prior to widespread optics use) it is the overall mass one needs to lay their sights on.

I would start with a size based on distances the target is going to be used at and manufacturing logistics, then go about drawing the silhouette on whatever size/shape of paper/cardboard you end up with to suit. I would tend towards a generalization and overall 'cartoon quality' graphic of the 'adversary' like what was done on the figs.11 & 12.
In a further simplification, the IPSC 'classic' (stop sign) target does well to represent the thoracic cavity.

I think you were heading in the right direction with the previous ww2 based stuff you did on 8.5x14" paper for the web shoots you were organizing some time ago.

It's alive!

Range report to follow sometime in the next month or two.

Beltfed: I miss the online Battlerifle league...it was a lot of fun! I was thinking about resurrecting it a while back, but still need to tweak the format so it isn't so much work to administer. Maybe if I could find a way to sell these things (economical transportation is the biggest issue, but I am working on it) I could get a DIY-sortof-service-rifle-postal league for us folks without current access to real-deal service condition matches.

Cheers,

Brobee
