At the 2005 Ontario Provincials, I had two Chronys that wouldn't work right. I absolutely HATED Chrony for the trouble it gave us that week.
Since then, I've had CEDs & PACTs not work too. I now own a Chrony, a PACT, a CED and a Prochrono.
The only one that has never let me down is the Prochrono; but it is the newest.
My favorite feature in it is that the battery tray has a space to hold an extra battery for when you forget to bring a spare.
I have a light box made of plywood with two fishtank-style incandescents in it that works for the Pact, Prochrono and Chrony.
(I have the IR setup for the CED - it does take less space.) The light box cost about $30 at Home Depot to build.
I've asked the guy that makes the RU Ready timers why he never made a chrono (it seems like the natural progression.)
He said they're too much headache. Having seen enough of them be finicky, I believe him.
My advice: buy whichever has the features you like the most. Brand is pretty much irrelevant.
