Which Vortex Red Dot on new T97?

I run an eotec with the magnifier now, but had a Falke red dot on before. Happy with both, I just wanted the falke on a different rifle.

I know neither is the dot you are looking at, but my point is that I think the rifle suits a red dot of any flavour.

Thanks for taking the time to chime-in here.

But ... I am "working on a budget" here ... I drive a 2006 Hyundai Tucson. And totally adore it. Five-speed. (Auto or 4WD locked BorgWarner AWd.. AND regularly replaced $$$ winter tires.

We are (obviously) from different worlds. I drove a taxi ... in Brandon ... from 1969 to 1971. I was #58.

Again, thanks for commenting.

So ... nobody at CGN has ever tried-out Vortex red-dots on their new T97's?

dang

I run a spitfire AR on my tnw. I actually find I prefer the lower height of the eotec on my t-97. The Falke was lower yet. The Spitfire AR was designed (obviously) for the Ar, but when I hold my T-97 at the height I would need for the spitfire (placing them side by side) it feels like a chin weld rather than a cheek. That’s about all I can help with. Hope others chime in with more direct experience.

I have no idea what a "tnw" is ... but I was savvy enough to buy a Model 19 in 1973.

That is exactly the kind of info here that I was hoping for. Lower is better, right ... as long as you have a decent muscle-memory look from the stock, right?

And a 50 yd sight-in is the most reasonable, right?

Thank you very much.

The “tnw” is my aero survival rifle pcc.
Congrats on getting that mode 19 back in ‘73! I was 3 years old then, so it would be a few years before I was in the market for one ;)

The spitfire is “lower 1/3 cowitness”, in standard AR site height language. I prefer the absolute cowitness height on my T-97, but your preference may of course vary. I see the SPARC2 comes with a multi height base which seems like it could adjust for any preference?

I have a framed full page B & W magazine advertisement (from Outdoor Life magazine, I think) for that .357 Combat Magnum ... sitting on the chest-of-drawers in my home's guest room. (Only in Alberta!! )

I bought the Model 19 (it was my second handgun) when I was teaching (by choice) in a small country-school north of Williams Lake in the Cariboo Country. The perfect revolver for that part of Canada ... I already knew all about its history (and Bill Jordan) even before I spotted that beauty (and naturally got all excited) at a gun counter in Calgary one day. Had to have it ...

Yes, the Sparc 2 can be placed about as low on the T97's rail as any comparable red dot, so I think that that is what I will likely do. And our local hardware store (owned and run by folks who also like/appreciate good guns and knives) has a good collection of Vortex optics.

And an equally good collection of Zero Tolerance knives as well ... which is always a good sign, right?

OP - if you are on a budget, might I suggest something which is of EXCELLENT value and have overwhelmingly fantastic reviews - The Sig Sauer Romeo 5 red dot sight. It retails around $240-$260, and some places have them even lower. I have had the Sparc AR before (as well as a Strikefire 2), along with other Vortex products and I am not a fan. A number of my guns are outfitted with the Romeo 5. Advantages include:

1. Shake to wake. Don't have to turn it on and off, especially with the mushy Vortex buttons
2. Quick auto off timer. 2 minutes instead of 12 hours
3. Long battery life - something like 50,000 hours
4. Great price
5. Reliable and dependable - which is why I use a lot of these, as well as the Holosun 515 series (more costly). For a budget friendly product, the Sig can't be beat, in my humble opinion.

if you decide on the sparc 2. they can be had for 200.00 cdn over at cabelas.ca. i bought one and it’s a great little dot!

I appreciate your trying to save me some money, but I just double checked the website (I've spent a quite a while there recently) and confirmed that it is now $300 ... as I mentioned near the start of the thread.

(You must have "lucked-into" a great Sale Price a while ago. I am a victim of Justinflation ... and much of the reason for my purchasing that new T97 is so I can put my thumb into that bastard's eye.)

But thanks for chiming in!

Oh, great!! Just great! Thanks for giving me second thoughts just as I was about to go out the door and head over to the Home Hardware. Really. I just put my wallet into my pocket.

But thank you. I'll delay for a day and go online this evening and extensively read-up on the Romeo 5. (Naturally, the name had rung a bell from my initial researching.) There are two reasons that I "want" to stay with my Sparc choice. The first is that I would like to support my local small-town gun store. They are genuinely good people, with a superbly stocked firearms/hunting section. And prices the same as the big retailers!

The second reason is found on YouTube ... where (without a doubt) the best (and most extensive) Canadian T97 Youtube channel is based in rural Alberta, as I am too. The fellow who runs it seems absolutely solid. It's called Black Bear Outdoors ... and has five T97 videos ... and he likes his Sparc ...

hello,

did you look into the dot before buying one? your eyes maybe not like it,. for the t97 gen3 i do think what they call a lvpo with a red dot or illuminated reticle will be a better option and may strech the distance you can shoot it .

oh darn. just a couple days ago it was still 200.00

Black Bear channel is great!

Glad you are supporting your local store. Some, not all, but some, deserve our support.

After lunch I went to the store and bought the $200 Crossfire, and it (at first glance) seemed fine.

But, be careful what you wish for! I could have ordered-in a Vortex Sparc AR for around $300 ... but its AAA battery gave it a slightly-higher profile in the rail ... and I was (unrealistically old-school) obsessed with having the sight line as close as possible to the bore. JTF2 fantasies from an old fat guy ...

I came home ... removed the skeletonized "tall" riser/clamp that was factory-installed on the Crossfire and replaced it with the (provided) short "standard" riser/clamp. It then looked exactly like what I wanted ... nothing could be lower!

Or (as I immediately learned) worse in real-life aiming! What works great on a pistol sucks on a T97. The über-low height may be less vulnerable to imagined bumps (during moonless night-drops), but it sucks on a rifle with a straight-line stock like my T97 or my old full-sized Stag AR15 rifle.

So, tomorrow, humbled but wiser, I will put the Crossfire's skeletonized higher riser/mount back onto the the scope (it had arrived that way, as I mentioned earlier), and clamp it home onto the T97's rail.

And maybe put the rifle's iron sights (too quickly removed) back onto its rail. Perhaps they'll co-sign, even ... but that's not a deal breaker.

This is becoming a hobby! Helping to fill my boring life with crucial decisions and judgement-calls ... almost like (again) being a Science teacher ...

I believe the high mount is lower 1/3 cowitness? So there we go. Personal preferences make all the difference! Perhaps I have a small head ;)

You are right that it’s a hobby. I have an astigmatism and I read that people with that problem can have issues with some types of dot sites, so I bought one or more of each type. Turns out they all work, but they all have other advantages and disadvantage. That spitfire, for instance, has an etched reticle so even if the battery dies I can use it. I have as much fun with sights as with the guns!

Yes, I have an old Tasco Red Dot (from CT) that I've used on my AR. And my AR has a CenterPoint low variable power optic mounted on it right now ... with the illuminated crosshairs.
