I have a son 16 interested in a shotgun. We are looking at eithe IGA uplander or Boito a680 in 20 gauge which would you reccomend. Thanks

Just some light target and thrown clay pigeons. He likes the double barrel and it looks like the a 680 and uplander are the same gun by different name. Both made in brazil by the same company.

At 16 he should be shooting a 12 gauge. My brother is 14 and has been shooting 12g for 3 years. Use light trap loads 1oz to 1 1/8 oz. He will love it, start him out one shell at a time until he learns to control the recoil and muzzle direction.

I say if he likes the Boito, get him that. But as you say, the IGA Uplander is also made by Boito, just labelled IGA Uplander for the importer, Stoeger, so if he likes that variation better, get him that.

I have a Boito A680 in 12 gauge with double triggers and a straight grip stock which I bought used and it is certainly a good enough gun for the money. I looked at some new and used Uplanders and didn't see any significant difference in build quality from my Boito. (I was interested in a 20 gauge but didn't find one and I liked the other features enough to settle for the 12ga.)

A 20 will be fine. A fellow I know who has forgotten more about guns then I'll ever learn swears by his 28 for everything upland.

No doubt that, in experienced hands, a 28 or 20 ga can do anything a 12 ga can.

However, the reason other posters are recommending a 12 ga for beginners is because the extra weight helps tame the recoil. 12 ga is also the best choice for target shooting, as the shells are cheaper.

I'll never knock a 16, 20, or 28 gauge, but beginners should always be introduced to shotguns with 12 gauges, as long as they can manage the weight of the gun.

The 12ga with 1oz-1 1/8oz is a much better way go to less recoil than the smaller gauges as far as the two guns mentioned find a used Wingmaster or a Browning BPS and then he will have some quality .

A 12 gauge with a recoil pad kick less than a 20 gauge. More shots in the shell also means more chance to hit the target. Extra weight also soak up quite a bit of kick.
