Which would you choose? 4200 or VX-1

Leupold- they're more robust mechanically and have better warranty support in the unlikely event that they do break.

which particular scope sizes are you considering ie 2-7 x ?, 3-9 x ?, 2.5-10 x ?
What reticle type do you want? Uses- Hunting? Target? Varmint??

More details needed.

I'd also factor in favor of Bushnell any features I wanted that I could get in the Elite Series that might not be in the same price range with the Leupolds, such as magnification, target turrets, mildot, rainguard, DOA reticle. I prefer the Leupold for a simple hunting scope as I am confident of the quality and warranty. I choose the Elite's sometimes when I want features I am too cheap to pay way more for on the Leupold. So figure out what you want to use it for, and compare the features you have to have between the two. If Leupold has what you need and you can afford it, I'd give it the edge.

The VX-1 compares more to the 3200 series (and Burris Fullfield II, and Sightron SI, and Nikon Buckmasters) in my experience. The 4200 would be a step up from there.

Even allowing that the VX-1 is the cheapest of the Leupolds, and the 4200 used to be the best of the bushnells, I'd still take the cheapest Leupold over the best bushnell, even with single coated lens and friction adjustments.
After awhile you get tired of things breaking.
Why not look at a VX-11, the price is more comparable?

I also would take the cheapest Leupold (the Rifleman actually) over the best Bushnell simply based on the support you receive from Leupold.

Best warranty, best support, best optics!!

I also agree that spending a few more dollars and getting the VX-II would be the best bet.

If it were between the 2.... I would go Bushnell every time! I own a 4200, 3200 and a VX-3, and a Vx-ii. I would take the 4200 over the vx-ii but not the VX-3. However Leupold does have a fantastic warantee, but the 4200 is built like a tank!

I'd take the 4200 myself, and i am a Leupold fan, I have seen Leupolds fail from 45/70 recoil, I even know the loads that did it!

Leupold VX-1. i was contemplating the same thing and my dad said " son get the 3X9X50mm conquest zeiss you won't be happy with the 4200", and he was right so if you can get a zeiss not bad price on them.

Personally I find Leupold optics way overrated.

I just bought a rifle that has a 2.5x10x40 4200 and it's a very nice scope, very bright and clear. The scope is a bit heavy, but optically it compares favourably to the Zeiss Conquest I generally use.

I would buy the 4200 over the VX1 all day.
