I'm looking for a used scope to put on top of my new savage 12fvss .223. There are 3 scopes on the EE that caught my eye. One is a NIKON Buckmasters-6-18x40 and the other is a Nikon Monarch 5-20x 44mm or 6-24x40 4200*elite. What are the major differences with the monarch and the buckmaster??? What would you pic and why??

p.s. both nikons have the nikoplex retical and the Bushnell has the multi-x

I don't know anything about the Bushnell...

The Nikon Monarch has better optics at 95%+ light transmission, while the Buckmasters is around 92%. I have the Buckmasters 6-18x40SF sitting on top of my Savage 93R17 GLV...and honestly, it's an awesome scope. Very bright with good edge to edge clarity, and the side focus parallax adjustment is convenient to use. There's no distinguishable degrading of clarity (with my eyes anyway) as I turn up the magnification to 18x. The target turrets are also a nice feature.

I'm thinking about replacing the scope on my target .22 with the Monarch 5-20x that you are also considering. I think it will be a superior scope, unless I get another killer deal on a 6-18x40SF Buckmasters.

A buddy has a nikon buckmaster 6-18x40 and the scope is really nice but the cross hairs are rather thick compared to the cross hairs on the bushnell 3200 10x scope that is on my 223. That is one thing I would check out if I were picking out a new scope. I really prefer the finer crosshair...just my 2 cents

possibly...The buckmaster he has, has noticably thick crosshairs compared to my scope however there may be different reticles for the buckmaster that arn't as thick...

Thanks for the replies. I just got offered a sweet deal on a bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 that i probibly will take. what are your thoughts on the 6500?

i really like my 6500, also in 2.5-16x42, very clear and bright and the power range is nice, as is eye relief:)
as some have mentioned in previous posts, the 6500 doesn't have hash marks denoting how many revolutions the turret has made, which hasnt bothered me yet, because 200 meters is a far as my range stretches.

with the deal i'm getting on it I think i'll get the scope, and if not having the hash marks gets anoying i'll put it on my 30-06 and get a new scope for my .223 when my skills improve and my range grows further

thanks for the replies

The 6.5x zoom range is pretty darn awesome on those 6500's. With that kind of range, you'd only need one scope for everything, including long range target. I've heard that the MOA range is pretty huge as well. Should be a good scope.

i believe it's 80 MOA.. looks like it is a very versitile scope and the good news is, the rifle it will be mounted on should be here tomorrow or friday at the latest :dancingbanana: :sniper: :sniper:
