Norinco Type-97 Rifle, 5.56mm

OR

IWI Tavor T.A.R. 21 5.56mm

even though the only canadian retailer i could find for the iwi is canadaammo and their currently waiting on some parts from israel cuz the firing pins they currently got arent made for the type of ammo we would be using, but i mean when they do eventualy get the weapons modified

but ya, which would you get and why, price aside

i dunno, to many sections in the forum, this is the closest one i found, why the tavor?

In this case I believe that you get what you pay for. I am sure that both will punch paper quite well, I have just always had a thing for Israeli rifles.

I dunno if it matters which one you want, as the Tavor is still unavailable with no ETA. If both were available though, and price aside I'd get the Tavor. Factoring in the price difference I'd still get the Tavor as it can be converted to lefty friendly. Price and ambi capability aside I'd still get the Tavor as it wins the least ugly contest by a fair margin.

Tavor - 3, T-97 - 0 :)

The Tavor, because its got the curves in tall the right places. The Chinese type 97 is brutal to shoot, the ergonomics are horrible, if you're left handed you best not shoot it left handed or it will knock your teeth out. The optics suck on the 97, and try reloading it, once again the Chinese FAIL at ergonomics. The Tavor is comfortable, easy to reload, the optics are great, and you can shoot it left handed I believe. And the Tavor is just prettier.

I'm left handed, now you made me think twice about buying the Type 97 but the price is just right for me to buy the Type 97.

For me the $3000 for the Tavor was outside my comfort zone. The price I paid for my Type 97A was as well, but I have a "thing" for combloc guns so I had to have one (this was when a <$1000 price tag was only wishful thinking and hope).
I have found my T97A to be a much better gun than I expected it to be. Also, with the number of CGN'ers that have projects on the go to mod the @#$@ out of them now that they are about to hit the market at a good price and availability, I see it as an even better investment. Once one of the mag release mods being developed comes into being it will make this a very competitive gun IMO.
Now, as a disclaimer, I am right handed and I don't reload for .223.

Have you shot one? From what I have read the Type 97 is very nice to shoot, the ergonomics however are off. You can shoot it left hand. Plus the bolt/action seems to be very similar to my Swiss Arms PE-90 (Both based off AK action). As a result they throw the brass at the 2:00 position.

Optics may be an issue as it always is for firearms with carry handles. However they're an issue right now with the Tavor as well. Most say the optics on the Tavor suck. One of the most common mods is for a rail to replace the optics.

As for reloading. From what I've read by those that own a Type 97 is that It's the same as my Swiss PE-90. Only the rim is dented. You can reload.

I've shot a Tavor. I really liked it. Nice firearm. Ergonomics were great. Also the optics on the one I shot were replaced and very good. As for shooting left handed, you would want the special bolt which isn't available right now.

I'd ultimately like both. That being said I wouldn't snubb the Type 97 so fast.

Type 97 is brutal to shoot..... ergonomics are off...... I admit the safety and the mag release are not great but in my humble opinion the rifle shoots and handles very well. It makes my M4 feel rather gangly and excessivley long in comparison. I have fondled but not shot a Tavor so cannot compare, but I do like the 97. Where else are you going to get a bullpup for that kind on money? The TAVOR seems to have problems too aren't they under recall for new bolts and new ones unobtainable?
