Which would you keep?

I've had this FNS-40 for a while and I bought it with the stainless slide (from that super cheap batch when they were around 300) but I'm generally not a fan of stainless... so I started working towards getting a black slide... and a 9mm conversion barrel - took long enough.

So which would you keep? I don't need both but having some doubts...

Black

Or stainless

Because as it turns out the stainless goes very well with another stainless FN I have (old pic)

Why even bother? Because this is after all the most canadian handgun when equipped with a conversion barrel (from EFK) - the 40 mag is limited in such a way that it takes only 10 rounds of 40 but ignores 9 - so it's full capacity of 17 rounds of 9mm - legally

Tough choice! I had a similar issue when trying to decide between an all black or SS/black tuxedo looking Staccato P

The SS looked great but I thought I might get sick of it and so I chose all black

I still question my decision when I see an SS/black model

And also I really like the matte finish on your SS slide, its not too bling. All that said Id probably still go all black and question that decision at times

St. Petersburg Military Academy FN1900…mmmmm…..cou:

Ha! You noticed :)

I would go .40s&w with a black slide if I had to choose one, realistically I’d keep both and shoot 9mm & .40s&w out of one gun.

Don't need to keep both slides to shoot both calibers. AS pictured I have two slides, two 40sw barrels and 1 40-9 conversion barrel. Really not easy to decide which slide to keep :(

You may not need two slides, but do you need to get rid of one of them ? I would have no trouble hanging onto both sets, but then, I have trouble getting rid of any of my gun stuff. Why not just sit on the decision for the time being and over a period of time, you may decide (without doubt) which you would like to divest yourself of.

Why not get one milled for a Dot?

That's a good option.

If nothing changes and we can never acquire new handguns, parts like slides and barrels are a good thing to keep around. Not that you'll ever shoot out a 9mm barrel, but it can't hurt to have some extra parts in case something happens (Say you squib and bulge a barrel/damage the slide or something stupid). I would definitely keep both.

How likely am I to need to replace a slide? Since milling came up - how much more likely is a milled slide to break? Because I can mill the one I'm keeping and the optic is removable if I don't want it... I should have mentioned that I also have a short (regular to the pictured long) slide I'm keeping... Money is not tight but I can always find something else to spend it on instead of keeping it tied up...

Though on the subject of optics on handguns - that market is in a lot of flux - the standard mount interface is yet to be settled, depth of cut still being argued about - I'm likely to wait for all that to be hashed out before I mill anything.

I'm still undecided - I hated the look of the gun with the stainless slide at first, but now that I have the black one, I can't say I love it that much more... ugh!

I'd need money very very badly to force me to sell that slide and barrel. This is very likely stuff you may never be able to acquire again.

Black one came from the US. Really was not a big deal apart from the time and that was mostly my fault.

Otherwise I have too much in the way of parts taking up boxes and boxes... and more guns than I can ever expect to shoot... some stuff needs to go...

You can still buy handguns from IRG. They just strip the frame and send you everything but the registered part. Not a particularly cheap way to get a slide and barrel, but very much something you can still acquire.

I have an FNS9LS in stainless and one in black also,, after many years I still can’t decide which one I prefer lol, good luck trying to decide!

I wouldn't let that stand in your way. There are only a few common options for pattern at this point, I'd just go with whatever the shop recommended.

And, definitely choose an experienced shop.
