While I am at it, should I lengthen my forcing cones?

I've got my 12 Gauge 1976 Citori G1 Field in at a smith to get the full choke reamed to Improved Cylinder in the over barrel. Background; there is not enough metal to install the carlson tru chokes to shoot steel, and I am only reaming the over choke to leave the under Modified alone and save some cash.

In talking to the smith I mentioned lengthening the forcing cones and he said that he can do it for another $100.

Should I bother? Is it really worth the $100?

If you are on a budget, leave the forcing cones alone. You'd be hard-pressed to identify a measurable improvement in patterns or reduction in recoil as a result of lengthened cones.

It’s all really a matter of what the cones are like in the first place. Most early guns 60's/ 70's like yours have very quick transitions and yes it will provide a very slight pattern improvement and a noticeable recoil difference. Newer guns you probally would not see any difference
Last one I had done was an early 70's 870 TC trap and it was worth it on that one
Cheers

Did you measure the bores first... I am betting that they were not the equivalent of the modern Full/Mod... I did a 1980 Grade 2 and it was .680" & .705"... or roughly "Turkey" & "Extra Full" even though it said Full/Mod. I went .715" Top and .725" Bottom, which was perfect.

Forcing cones
Are they chromed?
What length are they now?
2-3/4 Paper shell ?
2-3/4 plastic
3"

longer with a more gradual angle will reduce felt recoil

Just picked up one of my 1100 barrels, that I had shortened and the forcing cone extended [thats the chamber cone , not the choke cone], can't wait to try it out.

Yeah I did measure them HC, the full was .690"; apparently right between f and extra full. The modified was .710". I told Brady to ream the top choke to .720".

It was your post HC that had me call Brady and send off my barrels! I can't wait to use it for all around hunting.

JHSF, I don't know if the barrels are chromed, I read online that they are not. The chambers are 3 inches and I did not measure the forcing cones before sending them off.

If you turkey hunt, the forcing cone modification will permit tighter grouping at 40 yards, i had done on my 11-87 and it made a big difference... JP.

Yeah I guess that I might as well get the forcing cones done.

hoytcanon; what made you ream the barrel's to light Modified and Skeet sizes ( .715" Top and .725" Bottom) instead of Mod/IC (.710/.720")?
