Ok,
so I’ve been toying with the thought of building a 300 whisper for some time. ive been looking around and found fun information about the cartridge. no recoil, is very economical to load and can also be used for hunting by loading supersonic.
so ive been thinking of using the stevens 200 in 223 as a platform. I would need to change the barrel to a 30 cal and I was told that I would probably need a 1:8 if I want ot get good results.
my first question is:
Does anyone know where I can find any whisper barrel to match (30 cal 1:8)?
I understand the cartridge performs better on a short barrel, is this true? if so what is the optimum length?
has anyone here done this ?
pointers and tips would be gladly appreciated.

is there anything else I would need to convert to the 300 whisper?
brass wouldn’t be a problem. I have lots of 223 that I can reform.

thank you.

i may have a .300 Whisper bl. avail. soon as I am getting a new one made. There is nothing wrong with the barrel but it is 1 in 10" twist which does not suit my needs at all. My new Gaillard bl. will be 1 in 13" twist and more suitable for testing cast bullets. In my opinion, the advantage of the .300 whisper is it's accuracy, and low cost of reloading. I use a 170-210gr. cast bullet and 7.5 grs of AA-9 for 1050 fps or so. I don't see much advantage to using expensive bullets as you don't gain much ballistic advantage due to it being subsonic. I would build one from a Rem. 700 short action, and make the cases from .222rem.brass, as case neck thickness is perfect when done right.

Does anyone one knows what the minimum legal length the barrel can be.
I understand that usually the barrel for this cartridge is kept short for some reason?
I would like to know why?

The .300 Whisper was designed to be suppressed and low velocity is required to do that. A long barrel only adds velocity and less accuracy for a given barrel weight.

If you aren't suppressing it (which we can not do legally in Canada) why bother?
