This past weekend I managed to sneak out for a couple of days and chase some whitetails. I had scouted the area in Sept and had seen several whitetail deer and a few mule deer so I figured my chances were pretty decent. My plan was to camp out a couple of nights in my truck bed and still hunt/stalk on foot with my backpack using the truck as a base camp.
Well I know my mule deer hunting tactics were working as I managed to get within easy shooting distance of several mule bucks and some does. Unfortunately it’s very hard to get decent pictures of deer in low light at distances of 75-100 yards. Most pics look like they were taken with a toaster rather than a camera. Do ya hear me Santa?
The whitetails that I had seen during my scouting trip decided to take a vacation I guess as I did not see a single one. But the weekend was not all frustration of watching mule deer with no tag. Just as the sun went down on the second evening I was checking out a poplar stand that borders a fence line for some pasture. As I sat still for a minute I noticed movement about 100 yards away and spotted 3 coyotes working along the fence. It was getting dark fast and I had run out of cover to hunt before dark so I made the decision to take a shot.
The dropped my first coyote double. I got some on video as well. I self filmed it like survivor man meets wild TV show. I really need a better setup for filming. I’m realizing that filming hunting adds another bit of fun to the whole experience.
