Whitetail with .223?

A 223 isn't a beginners un, it's an experts gun.

If I was touse the 223 on der, I woudl use an X bullet and make sure of exacting shot placement, there is no room for error.

As said befire, it's basically a stunt. We have zillions of better options.

...............spearchucker, are you typin drunk today??? :D

topics like hunting deer with 223 is so much hearsay

of the 15,000 members on CGN, I bet 10-20% of them own a 223 rifle of somesort. that is a couple thousands.

maybe 1/4 of those guys hunt, thats 500 guys who hunt with a 223

how many of them 500 guys hunt deer with a 223? maybe 5% or less. that is a couple dozen guys at most who legally use a 223 for deer hunting.

how many of those guys load an optimum, premium bullet in the 223, such as a 60 grain Nosler or 53 gr. Barnes X?? probably a couple.

Im not going to go out and chase deer this fall with my 223, but if I did, loaded with a great bullet, and had the self restraint to limit shots to broadside, 100 yards or closer, surgical placement into the heart/lungs, I think Id find the 223 would work pretty damn good. Seeing how I have a 260 & 30-06, I dont think Id be willing to go through all the trouble just to find out.

For 99.9% of the hunting population, something between a 243 & 300 Mag is a better choice for hunting deer. :)

the best post from the thread on 24 hr

There is really no margin for error in a slightly misplaced shot that a bigger/faster/wonder bullet may make up for.

The 223 kills deer graveyard dead IF you can hit them exactly where you are aiming too. Which is easier with a 223 because there is no recoil to worry about and the round and rifles for it are usually tack driving accurate.

The 223 is no cartridge for the general population to go blim blaming at every deer they see and hope for the best IMO.

But if you are a cool customer, willing to pass some shots offered and confident enough in yourself and your gear to KNOW you can hit the spot you are aiming at then the little 223 and plain old cc bullets will work like a charm. Notice I did not say just hit the deer, I said hit the spot on the deer.

Well said Todd.

I am in the process of buying a 223 (my first) and have no intention of using it on deer. My .308win or 7mm Rem Mag or even my 350 Rem Mag can handle the deer. The 223 is intended to be a practice round for me - and maybe if there is a chance in the future, I will take it out for coyotes.

But to each their own.;):D

.223 is a ground hog calibre, and that's all. I've even read that soldiers who are serving in Iraq and Afganistan complain about how ineffective the rounds are on human targets. Hence the big push towards bigger heavier bullets.

so for you, what that consist of ######, Creatin, and nandrolone??

..............When one is on Nandrolone, a testosterone based steroid, ###### is the last thing one needs.:D

........and yes i do put creatine on my corn flakes. So what!!:D

..............what about the .223 for moose, girafe and chimpanzee??:D

I personally wouldn't deer hunt with anything smaller than a .243.Although I knew guys who went hunting with 222,223,and 22-250 I find all are kind of light for this size of animal.

I normally hunt with a shotty, 44mag, 30-06 or 30-30 and find they are plenty gun for the short range deer we get (we never get a shot over ~100yards).

As I thought, the .223 is a little small. *print* :D

Thanks for the input guys

I have no problem with an experienced hunter/shooter taking a deer with a 223.Tree stand hunting or field hunting where you can wait for a good broad side shot would be the best choices for doing so.You can almost thread a needle with a 223 so plugging a deer through the lungs out to 300yds would be a snap.

.243 for deer is the smallest I would go.

.223 for Coyote or Wolf (if we had wolves).

Not to say it can't be done....I'm sure a good spear would work too, but I'm not about to do that either.

You can kill a deer with a properly placed rock too;) Sure it can work, but personally I do not go hunting with a pocket full of pebbles. :D
