My father has recently inherited a very interesting rifle. It is labeled Whitney Arms Co ????? NY. Part of the name has worn off. It is a rolling block rifle chambered in ".38 CF." It sports a 26" octagonal barrel. It looks like it's old as the hills, but I'm not sure of exact age. Sights are missing. The wood looks like it's possibly walnut, but again, not sure. Can anyone give me some background on this firearm? I have looked on the Internet, but there is precious little on Whitney Arms. Basically, just enough to know the company existed for about 25 years at around the turn of the century (19-20th). Any whitney experts out there?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I had a chance at a rifle that was I think a Whitney-Kennedy lever rifle some years ago. I have not seen one since and wish I had taken it. It seemed very well made and unusual looking. Do you have a picture of this? I have a .38WCF 1873 Winchester and it's .38/40 caliber, is this the same?

Whitney Arms Company was in run from early 1800 to about bought by Winchester in 1888. They made 2 stlyes of rolling blocks from 1871 to 1888. The second type is basicly a copy of the Reminton. If you can pick up a Flayderman's guide to antique American firearms it to covers Whitney company very good.
I have a Whitney Phoenix single shot in 45/70

Whitney-Remington is marked "Whitney Arms Company, New Haven CT USA"
#1 sporting rifle is made 1881-1888 in those calibers.
Various centerfire calibers & barrel lengths & styles.

Sorry that's about all I can help with, far from a Whitney expert!
Except I know a guy with a 45-75 Whitney Kennedy :)
