Its so slow at work I decided to make a nosecap for my ross dewat project. Making complex parts using nothing but basic hand tools & sheet steel is not fun. A big shout out to my homies in the Khyber pass!

I've been thinking about doing this to make a MkI nosecap. What do you mean not fun? That looks like it was a real challenge! Mind sharing some of what you did to build it?

I got lucky a couple of years ago, I found a 1912 nose cap sitting on a table at a gun show $10. I jumped on it, I just had to TIG weld a piece in were some one had opened it up to fit a 303 barrel.
I had intended on fabbing one but $10 was too easy.

By "not fun", I mean it is a crap load of work & hard on the hands. I had two pieces of bar that I used to bend 1/8 sheet into U shapes & welded them together. The bayo lug was made from scrap steel with a file. Much welding, grinding & filing required.

Just a guess Bruce but is the left one for some type of Mauser?

I was thinking of shaping a pair of feet to squeeze the sheets into shaped halves and then go to my friends and tig them plus the front face together. I have an original MkII nose cap here to copy, then just have to cut the L shape out of the back end of it. For the stacking swivel wire I was thinking of using an appropriate piece of cold roll or something and spinning it to diameter, then putting a small grape on each side of its swivel mount to hold it centred, then heat it with a torch and bending it around a mandrel on both sides. The bay lug and lower section I would do just like you did, then tig on and spot weld it in two places on the inside like the original. Then heat the whole package cherry red and dunk it in some of my Uncle's oil out of his Duramax, trust me it's the blackest oil on earth. Should leave a perfect finish. After that I will probably figure out how to artificially age it to get some patina on it so it matches the rest of the rifle. Might be a pipe dream but I usually have good luck with this type of thing.

Btw I think you did a fine job and took the time to do it, a lot of talk of people thinking about it, but you actually did it. I find this kind of task to be very relaxing and fun, there is no pressure and it's quite satisfying to do a nice job. Best part is if it's yours and you screw it up no one else will care! Ha ha
