Whitworth 30-06 stuck bolt

Has been my impression that a rifle's chamber should be smooth and shiny like a mirror - others have said to be able to see some cross hatching on the finish in there - however, clean and dry - no pits or debris - the case upon firing is going to swell up to match the chamber wall - tightly - and should relax a smidgeon - to be able to extract - any rust or pits in there will cause the case to conform to that - results in a mechanical "lock" to be overcome, to get that case out of the chamber.

I've seen chambers that look like frosted bores not cleaned after corrosive ammo and the fired cases extract smoothly.

Last week I looked at a chamber that had rings from the mouth of the chamber to the shoulder. It was in 308Win and it extracted fired cases fine.

The biggest issue is with badly pitted neck areas IMHO.

If you have case separation during the extraction of the fired casing., it's gonna be a whole different story. Don't overstretch the brass.

I'd keep the bolt open, close to the cam, and give the brass a whack with the extraction rod. Putting some release oil into the chamber would be first though.

Thanks everyone. By now this post is long buried. Just want to give you guys a ending to this whitworth. Extractor was completely worn out or damaged from hammering the cartridge out. The original extractor would not take out a spent shell casing when I went to test fire the rifle. Tried fitting a couple different mauser extractors on the original bolt, yesterday managed to find one that fits the bolt/rifle and cycles a round. Have not test fired the rifle with the new extractor yet but I'm sure it will work. The 30-06 whitworth will now live on as a backup hunting rifle, loaner, and a "I don't have any attachment to this rifle so I don't mind if it falls out a boat/quad/bicycle" rifle.

Pull the barreled action from the stock, it will make it easier to not mess the gun up, ensure no screws are binding etc, then I would suggest muzzle up, and spray light oil (like remoil) down the bore, incase you have a casing sticking on rust etc.

Have you checked the chamber, it should be mirror smooth, if it is rough or rusty you'll have the same problem again after the first shot.
