My wife got me a Whitworth in .375H&H yesterday and I'm trying to figure out what weaver numbers is the bases for it. They don't have Whitworth on their mounts chart. The Remington 798 was a similar rifle was it not? Any ideas would be great.

So I borrowed some aluminum mounts to test if they're the correct mounts and sure enough Weaver 45 and 46 std Mauser is it.

This is just a mock-up mounting and I have already taking everything off. Id have to be brain dead stupid to mount a scope to a .375H&H with aluminum bases and rings that come with a Savage Axis scope package. One of these days soon I'm going to pick up a set of Weaver Grand Slam 45s and 46s bases and then either a set of Leupold PRW's or I may even give the QRW's a try for the quick release ability. Anyone know if the QRW's work well?

I'm also looking for a front sight hood for this rifle so the front sight doesn't rape my gun case again. It already did it.

I think the std 98 Mauser mounts such as the 798 would work. A quick phone call to Weaver might be in order to confirm.

Good choice for mounts BTW. I've used them on 3 or 4 375s without any trouble.

Might consider Leupold Mauser FN bases and Leupold standard rings. The rear base is windage-adjustable and are also available with an extended front base. I have these on my Remington 798's and Zastava LKM70's which are the same barreled actions as your fine Whitworth. Very minor filing might be required for the bolt to clear the rear base.

I was thinking about going with the Leupold STD's w/windage adjustable rear base.

I'm not really liking this leupold scope. It works I just don't like the way it adjusts its windage and elevation with no clicks. The vintage of the scope matches the rifle though which makes it a suiting pair. The scope is a 1978 VX-2 1-4x20. If anyone is interested on trading my Leupold 1-4x20 for a different 1-4x20 Id be interested.

Loaded my first 20rds for it tonight.

64gr of IMR 4064 over a 270gr Swift A-Frame

Just going to shoot it with iron sights this weekend so no need to figure out a load for it until I got the scope on it. Plus id like a better powder to figure out a hunting load with.

Personally, I've never had difficulty with the friction adjustments. In the end, it's not like you're dialing come-ups on this rifle. Set it and forget it. That said, you could always shop the EE for a used VX3 1.5-5x which can often be had for very reasonable prices.

My Winchester Alaskan has a 25" barrel. Its way too long. 23 would be sweet a smith said he could do it for under a couple hundred. How much speed would I loose?

Also, I have the standard Leupold bases and they are solid and good.

Your Whitworth has a 22" barrel? New Zastava 375's have 22" barrels.

Your muzzle speed would be around 2350 fps (22" barrel) with the load mentioned.

Pretty decent fully adjustable trigger on these. Here's a link and image for reference. Any doubts have a qualified gunsmith adjust it in case it needs tuning.

This Whitworth is a 24" barrel. I need to take a look at the trigger because the previous owner messed with it and now its too light of a pull for hunting with.

Yes I really like the windage adjustability on the rear base. So I very well may go with Leupold bases and Leupold STD rings.

I determined that my 20" barrel .375 H&H Mag. Zastava Fullstock Carbine (before I got it converted to .416 Rem. Mag.) got around 120 fps less muzzle speed with 270gr bullets compared to 24" barrel data in various reloading manuals. So about 30 fps less per inch of barrel length loss. About the same muzzle speed loss rate with my 21-1/4" barrel .375 Sako 85 Kodiak.
