I just acquired a "Whitworth" sporter p17 in 30-06, but the only place on the rifle that says "Whitworth" is the buttpad. It resembles a BSA sporterized p17 I've seen earlier but it isn't marked on the receiver. It appears to be drilled and tapped at the time of sporterization and is stamped "made in england" on the right had side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. It has two screw holes on the top of the receiver ring, and one just behind the charger area of the rear receiver. Any idea what one piece steel base would fit this? Thanks in advance.

I believe the original drilling pattern was for a PH base - which you are unlikely to find. You can use a two piece weaver based solution (I have for BSA rifles). However, on the BSA rifles the ground radius varied from rifle to rifle, causing the need for shimming etc. Also, the centre to centre for the screw holes on the rear bridge was less than the typical weaver spacing.

I brought my BSA marked U.S. M17 like that into Reliable and they knew what bases were required immediately.

But the holes weren't drilled correctly and they had to re-do them.

update

Just an update, the old Redield Jr Base model "30" is the correct base for this BSA/Whitworth sporter P17. It arrived today from the US and fits perfectly. Yay, no extra holes in the receiver now. These receivers must have been milled to match Remington's Model 30 of the 20's to 30's. Hope the info helps someone else - thanks for your input.
