Ladies and gentlemen,
Outside of Lee Enfields and perhaps a few Mausers, I am not that knowledgeable about obscure firearms. That being said, until yesterday I had never heard of the Whitworth Rifle Company of Manchester, England. Yesterday I received a Whitworth rifle. Since I have 3 P-14s this looks like a P-17 action (based on what I could discover, they did that after WWI). Anyway, it is chambered in .308 Win. Other than filthy, it looks to be operationally sound. Rifling looks good and crisp. Fit and finish is quite nice as well. I got it because the owner could not get it to shoot. His dad used it for years for deer hunting, but he couldn't get it under an inch and at 300 yds, he ran out of windage on the scope. Once I took the scope off, I looked through the iron sights. The rear mount is off-centre by 1/16". How the heck they did that, I have no idea, it probably warped the tube. I'll have to fill the holes and re-drill. We'll see what that does.
Anyway, any body have anymore info on the rifle or the company? I know it's nothing special, just a decent hunting rifle, but some company history would be nice.
I'll try to get some pics up in the next day or so.

The original Whitworth, Manchester was a premier company.
More recently, the name was acquired and used; nothing to do with the original.

English gun builders. Made some nice stuff back in the day, primarily sporters built on Mausers and Enfields. Eventually went under, name was bought up and tacked on some low rent guns. I still have a 50's era Whitworth Mauser sporter in 30-06 AI, a nice classic hunting rifle. - dan

This must be an older one. It's been used, but it still shows quality.
