was wondering if these were good shooters or are they finicky? remember 20 years back a book i read seemed to think the volunteer model was better, at least in regard to hunting. i recall the author (fadala) preferred the volunteer in part because you could jack it full with 120 grains of powder vs 90 on the whitworth (which is probably plenty).

i've only shot minie's out of a 58 cal infantry rifle so it seems this is a whole 'nother thing with paper patching and the like. any input on the whitworth would be appreciated. the volunteer model too for that matter.

I ve had a couple of the the PH volunteer rifles and they are top quality.I f you find one make sure you get the accessories that were originally sold with it, like the mould, bullet sizer,wad punch etc.One thing about using it for hunting is it is a tad heavy though not overly so.Like any muzzleloader it will take time at the range to find the proper load for it and you will need to get a platinum lined nipple for it as the standard nipple will wear out fast which effects accuracy.Most of these guns tend to be used for target shooting instead of hunting though it does certainly have the power for hunting large game.

would you prefer the 58 enfield for hunting over the volunteer? for fun is the 58 perhaps better, no need to swab a million times just keep shooting?
 
The 58 enfield would be good for hunting as a 58 round ball or Minnie bullet would be more than adequate for deer etc as long as you can consistently hit your target at what range you are shooting at.I have one of the Parker Hale musketoons that is unfired at this moment but have plans on taking it hunting,the shorter barrel makes it easier to handle in the woods
