Just came into a Whitworth rifle in 30-06

Barrel shows Whitworth Rifle Company Manchester England.

Really just looking for some general feedback on quality, etc. from anybody that has/had one.

Looks to be built well on a pretty beefy Mauser action.

Thanks

Every bit as good as a Mauser 98, I’m fact sorry it’s a copy. A lot are re-purposed Zastava’s. I had one a long time ago, found the barrel a little light for a 30’06, almost a featherweight.

Nothing wrong with those rifles. 98 actions are about as good as you get. I had one, a nice 30-06, but sold it, as I have several "hunting" rifles that never get used.

I owned a couple of them. 98 Mauser actions (one was clearly a war time action), well made. Good hunting rifles. - dan

I had one in 458 win with 3 leaf express sights that was a real beauty, but too much gun for me. Great rifles

I have one in 7x57. It's not a Zastava as it does not have the tang safety on the side of the action it has a two position wing safety on the bolt itself.

I have a Whitworth in 30/06 . It's an accurate and reliable rifle . I've used it to take a number of animals over the years , a great all purpose hunting rig .

Wonder if the caliber is sized like the wrenches.

Not quite. I had two Whitworth Express rifles in 375 H&H. Neither of them would eject loaded ammo! The bullet points would hit the receiver ring, and the round would fall back into the action. Factory rifle with factory ammo….. Amazing!

Easy fix with a Dremel tool. Mark the spot, grind out the ring where the round was hitting, keep checking the ejection until successful, and then remove a bit more to be sure. Polished everything up, and it looked just like Weatherby does it for some of their long cartridges. :)

Outstanding wood, too nice to carry for guiding, sold both and got two Mark X rifles on the same action. Did the same tune up for the ejection, shortened the barrels to twenty inches, and reinstalled the front sights. Very handy, very effective in close quarters, and VERY LOUD!
