I've seen some of Alex Sitman's (Masterclass Stocks) pillar-bedding work and have been really impressed. But he's in the US, and this makes it very difficult to get work to him from Canada. Is there anyone here in Canada who is known for particularly good pillar-bedding work (the way Alex is regarded in the US)?

No big secret to pillar bedding. Some make it look nicer than others, but once pillars are in line and the bedding is completed stress free it will work as well as it does. Pillars are no guarantee accuracy will be improved. It depends on the stock and the present bedding.

There are probably hundreds of guys who can do this...

It just takes some planning and a common sense approach I would say there a few hundred members on here that have worked through it with no problems. After the first one it is a fun project.I have done 5 of my CZ's. There is lots of good info on 22 bedding on the old internet.

Being from Saskatchewan I've got to plug Craige Douglas, Ted Gaillard, and if you know where to find him Jimmy Dugan. With Craige's in particular you have fight off the urge to take your gun apart just to look at it. I've got a single example each from Dennis Sorrenson and Corlanes and can find no fault.

I don't know how you could decide who best is.

I agree with guntech that pillars are no guarantee of improved accuracy, but they do make the things less susceptible to weather and humidity changes, and eliminate the necessity of searching for optimal action-screw torque--settings that may change with the weather. These days I'm primarily shooting rimfire, and action-screw torque on Anschutz rifles can have a bearing on accuracy. With pillars in place, differing levels of torque should be irrelevant. And although pillars won't guarantee improved accuracy, they certainly won't detract from accuracy and may improve it.

I don't trust myself to do a good enough job on a valued rifle, hence my request for names of guys who really know how to do this. I like the job on the 700 in guntech's post, with a full skim coat over and under the pillars.

Where would I find these guys?

Thanks.

A.C. Douglas 1 306-652-7828 Saskatoon. Besides doing great bedding, Craige has a well earned reputation for getting work done fast.

Ted Gaillard (306) 752-3769 Pathlo, His nephew Dean is doing the gunsmithing these days. I usually don't bother him unless I'm getting one of his barrels, then the one stop shopping is hard to resist.

Thanks, that's good to know, I actually spoke to Craige yesterday about bedding my gun, going to stop by and talk to him again when my stock shows up that I ordered. Just didn't click with his last name until you listed the shops name, I found it on a Google search.

If I was sending a stock to get worked on, it would go to Ian Robertson. I'm not saying the others mentioned are not as capable, I've just witnessed Ian's attention to details on more than one occasion and it is top notch.
