Who builds a nice SxS field gun these days?

Exactly! Though not a budget gun, I found a 98+% AYA #2 round body in 20 gauge, for about 40% of the price of a new one. I could shoot it for a few years, and stil sell it for more than I paid.

No flame towards you, but choke tubes on an upland gun is of very little benefit. I had them on my CZ and never changed them, ever. IC/M is a good start. My SKB is that and my Daly is IC/IC. A SxS will usually give you the choice of two chokes.

I rarely ever change chokes in my field guns. IC/M for all upland and pheasant hunting.

That all depends on the shooter and what he is hunting IMO. For me Mod tears up too many birds especially if one hunts woodcock and not required with the brits since most shots are within 25 yards
Me I like sk/sk but that is me
Also much easier to get good resale on a common upland gun with tubes today .I find buyers want them

No worries. I come from a strictly waterfowling background. I have many fixed choke shotguns and use them just as good. Just saying if you ever wanted to use the gun for multiple species a choke is a useful option. I have a love of fine doubles but a true hunting gun is always a tool used. And a tool I would rather spend my money on would be a quality double with changeable chokes then an older one with a fixed choke. One that may even need to be bored out to not be a full choke.

If more older doubles came choked in IC/M I'd agree with you. But they don't. Majority are fixed full and mod

I go SK & I/C on woodcock... most upland is I/C & M (90% of the time)... but sometimes on late season pheasant and sharpies, M & I/M helps you hold a pattern for those long flushing birds... and there have been days when F & F offered the best chance to connect...

I just opened a Grade 2 Citori to .725 & .715, which equates to LM & IM, which will be good for the vast majority of hunting... it is throwing good patterns with 3" steel #3 & BB'S on ducks and geese... and very nice patterns with #6 & #7 1/2 Field loads.
 
If I HAD to buy a value priced SxS that is a new gun, I would be aiming for a Dickenson from Cabelas. Don't know if they sell them in Canada but a lot of guys on the doublegun forum who have a LOT of SxS experience rave about them. As in went out and bought one. I'm actually thinking of getting one in .410 because finding a quality .410 SxS that isn't a stupid amount of money is next to impossible.

Both my Ugartechea 28 and my 40th anniversary are choked IC/MOD
Who needs to mess with chokes when you have an open and a tighter barrel??!!
I could certainly handle a gun choked IC/IM as well!:cool:

Just for giggles I took my old Spanish box lock sxs out and tested the pattern of the 26" cyl choke. With 7/8 oz #8 no clay target would be safe out to about 30 yards and I'd bet I could break quite a few at 35 if I put the shot in th right place.
I like the gun and it's cyl and full.
All of my sxs shot guns are fixed choked. The next will be ic/c I hope

Franchi Highlander's sell for well over 2K. I dont want to be specific on names, but there is a retailer in Oshawa currently selling one in 20g for about $3000 and another retailer in Orillia for about $2800. I have seen them go for as low as about $1800 in 12g. So given the pricing, most people looking for an economical sxs will be priced out. Needless to say, the Highlander is one sweet gun!

Agree with the comment on the wood used on Yildiz guns. I found the engraving/etching the receiver to be a bit cheesy, but the quality of the walnut was incredible! Apparently turkish walnut is still plenty available and relatively inexpensive. But quality is quality as far as Im concerned
 
I would suggest keeping your eye open for an older Beretta SxS like a 409, 410, 411 or 426. You'll be able to pick one up in excellent condition for about $1000 +/-. The quality of the gun is excellent and should last you a lifetime. My first gun was a Beretta 409 Silverhawk in 16g, which I still have and I love it. I have also owned a 12g 409 which I regretably let go a couple year back and it was a sweet shooting work horse. My 16gauge Beretta has double triggers which I much prefer for field use, but some of the older Beretta's were also offered with a single trigger if thats what you prefer.

Iffen I hadnt done so well yesterday with my Remington 1100 2-3/4'' 20 gauge with a 28'' Mod. Barrel I would be seriously looking at this fine shotgun.
Might not be what your looking for, but this one sure is purdey No???
Them chickens didnt stand a chance with 1oz Number 6 Federal Game Loads@30 yrds.

Absolutely right. That is a gorgeous gun and for $2500 I would take that all day long over a new Franchi at $2800 or $3000!!
