Who Can Identify This Remington + Missing Piece

I'm posting this for a friend.. He had this old Remington pump rimfire dated 1909 brought to him for a cleaning. He was given a separate piece with the rifle that according to the owner had "fell out".. Does anybody have an idea what this is? At first I thought it was an extractor but It doesn't seem possible to fit anywhere in the action unless i'm totally overlooking something.

Remington Rifle

It looks like a Remington Model 12 or 12A.----These were made from 1909 to 1936. Patented in 1909-1912 by John Pederson, this was the first Remington slide action rifle made. Early models had Remington-UMC markings, later ones had Remington markings only.

The "extra" part you have is the Cartridge Retainer. It fits in a groove under the barrel near the chamber. The long slot in it goes closest to the barrel. You should see a groove in the action bar and the bottom of the barrel where it goes.

This is one operation that a gunsmith should be utilized to replace this part if you do not know what you are doing. The rifle has to be taken apart, and the front assembly has to be disassembled, the action bar has to be removed throught the rear of the receiver, then the parts reassembled.

See if you can find a copy of the NRA Guide To Firearms Assembly, Try your library, or some libraries have a sharing system where you can borrow it from another library.

P.S. It is amazing the number of parts "that just fall out" of a rifle when firearms are taken apart by someone who knows very little about them.

Actually, good pictures and a good description make things like this question a lot less difficult to help with. Another help is a good reference library..I have collected a lot of helpful gun books over the years.

In this case, I have never owned a Remington 12, never had one apart, but a quick look through my reference books gave the answer. It's not what you know, it is knowing where to find it.

Hey Grouse Man, will this rifle shoot shorts as well as long rifle. I only tried a few long rifle after I fixed it. This isn't my rifle and the owner was wondering about that. Thanks in advance.
