Who can tell me about the Cooey 64?

It's been fun dusting this off and shooting it again after so many years. My 64 also came with a Bushnell 4X Sportview (hi end, I know! LOL). It has phillips screws to adjust the cross hairs but a session at the range last week with screw driver in hand didn't change the POI... at all... am I missing something here? Any hints from you 64 owners out there?

Hey, HangFire88...hope you get some input!

Just put an older bushnell 4x .22 scope* on and, having a hard time "driving tacks" with it too...I'd had a different scope on it[my 64] as a kid and, wasn't fantastic then. Wonder how much the barrel moves in the receiver? With open sights (all barrel mounted) it's very accurate. With a scope (receiver mounted) not as impressive...
...good new for me. I moounted the scope for a girlfriend who consistantly out-shoots me...now who laughs? I'm not sure it's a real problem yet. The scope I mounted as a kid was a $10 (now 20) can-tire scope..the current one is oold n' used.

* Dunno much about this scope...it's from a buddy who had it for 20 years. It doesn't mount with rings but, has a groove/dovetail along it's bottom. The "mount" is grooved to accept standard .22 dovetail on the bottom and, scope on top.

Try pushing the barrel to the right with your thumb, take a few shots, and then pull it to the left and take a few more shots. Not cool. If its anything like mine was, you'll have two crappy groups about 8" apart at 50yd.

I bedded the action and the barrel and it is now very accurate for a semi. No problem ringing a 10" gong at 235yd. (That wasn't with a little 4X vintage scope mind you.)

I adore my 64 (no, it's not a commodore...)

Zimbu, Thanks for the tip Can't make too much of a deflection with my thumb but, bedding would certainly help...I have found over the irons, it's very accurate...I suspect the deflection of barrel in receiver is still the culprit, I just don't have a powerful thumb! Will work on bedding it and, see how that fares!

ALSO NEWS FALSH (for me...):
Do you have troublepicking the best ammo for your 64? I there's quite a few posts on .22 ammo...
You can add CCI Blasers to the list of ammo the(my) 64 will digest happily!! Also, the only CCI I've found in bulk!!! WOOHOO SE Ontario folks...SFRC has both 525 Federals and 525 Blasers...same price and, it's LOWER than can-tire wallly mart too!!!
WOOOHOOO

A Philips screwdriver to adjust the cross hairs? That doesn't sound right. Usually it's a slot that a dime fits into.

And you were right! The caps on my old Sportview have ears that rotate out of the way to expose the 'adjustment screws'... based on this thread, I popped the caps OFF and lo and behold, the real adjustment screws appeared. I guess the ears were just vanity covers for the screws that hold the crosshair mechanism in the middle. Oh well, mystery solved! Back to the range to see how well this old puppy shoots! :50cal:

I paid $30 for mine
That pisses me off. People buy em from savage and sell them for double at gun shows(or where ever)
Winnipeg Toymaker gave me the contact info for savage parts a couple years back, saved me a few bucks and I got the parts I needed for cheap, directly from savage.

Manuals with parts list & phone numbers:

Sorry for the thread jack, it seems relevant. I have a late 60's (I think) Winchester Cooey model 64 .22LR semi-auto. There seems to be little info on the web about it.

The magazine for it is plastic and I'm having trouble locating a replacement. The savage 64 clip won't fit as it has slots and mine has tabs. I've included a pic of my clip. Any info would be great!

You have the first 2 years of production cooey 64. I have one also. These plastic mags are obsolete and are very rare to find. there have been a few for sale in the EEs in the last couple years but worth big dollars. The parts to convert the gun to the metal mag and magwell can be bought from Savage at great savings. The used plastic mags are really not worth buying as most I have seen and held were worn out and cracked. These do not last long when used. I have never seen a new one.My mag is cracked the same as yours, but I have many more .22s to use so I did not convert it....yet.

well, it's only cracked there at the top. and there's a metal sleeve behind it. So how much longer would it really last? I guess I could get the conversion bits just in case but it still fires fine, just need to do a complete tear down to clean. I would like to change my trigger pull too.

I adore my '64!

x2-Your plastic clip will be very tough to locate
x2-it's worth the time n' trouble to convert them.

...Over 50 years in production for these rifles and, still being made! Gotta mean something

...Here's a current ad in the EE. Perhaps the seller could be inspired to part out his plastic!
