Who can tell me about this smith and wesson

it is chanbered for 38 S&W, 5in barrel and has a serial number in the 800,000's It came with a canvas holster that says 1941 on it. On the other side of the lanyard loop it has a P on the bottom of the grip. It is registered as a victory model but there is no V just a P. and I also thought the victory models were only in 2in and 4in barrels?

Victory models were usually issued in 5" barrels. I seem to remember that the 3's and 4's were not issued as often. It should actually be registered as an M & P. Victory was a "Nickmane" given to the line. Does yours have a blued finish? If so, is the cylinder a slightly purple colour? Or is it Parkarized? (How does one spell that?)

Victory Mdl wwas a nickname for the S&W M&P that the serial number start with a V. If yours is in the 800,000 range it is base on the M&P series of 1905 4th change.

the gun has great blueing, the pic is showing to much glare. and the cylinder is a blue I think, I'll have to check when I get home from work. If it was purple tinged or parconized:D does that mean anything? here is a bit better of a picture showing the blue, it really is in great shape, bore and all!! also is the holster in the pic most likely original?? would this gun be of any value?
 
They made them with a slight purple tint so you could see at a glance that they were chambered for .38 S & W (.38-200) not .38 Special! The U.S. used these revolvers in .38 S & W as well as .38 Special. Must have been a supply nightmare eh?

???????? Purple tint??? Scott I thought you were against spreading fairy tales...

Scot knows that the colour variations are a function of metal hardness (when parkerized), metal alloy & reduction of surface finish polish, combined with a change to the phosphate (or parkerized) finish.

NOT a deliberate attempt to differentiate between .38 S&W and .38 Special.
 
I can't remember where I read that, it sounded good to me so I went with it. Mine has a slight colour tint so it sounded good to me. Could it not have been done on purpose?
