My father shot these 40years ago, and just loved/loves them but they have long since disappeared. He has shot most currently offered bullets from the various bigger brands but always comes back to lusting for more of these. I was wondering who or how a guy could get there hands on something similar. These are 0.458" 300gr and my father always called them "half jackets" but I'm not sure if that was the real name or not.

Any help is appreciated.

I have not seen these bullets for a few decades now. There a few manufacturers that make 45-70 bullets but the jackets extend up higher to the bullet ogvie and have lead past that point with a flat nose soft point. The other option which actually may be the closest to what you have there is a lead cast bullet with a gas check.

Those are swaged projectiles....there's a member here called 'oldrodder' who swages his own .20 and .40 cal, perhaps give him a PM....( not sure he's set up for '45's tho....)

Close, Bassmaster, I swage .224 from .22RF to make the jackets and I swage .430 (44 cal) from fired .40 brass. I also have .44 cal 1/2 jackets laying around. I might have some .45 pistol 1/2 jackets as well. I will look

I stand corrected...it's all good. I hope that .40 brass worked out for you....I've seen your stuff and it's amazing. I hope you don't mind me passing along your expertise on the subject.
Cheers

Here's a pic of the process to make a .44 cal bullet from a lead core and an annealed .40 cal case.

Some .224" bullets made from .22RF cases. These are three different weights made from 3 different jacket lengths.

Several hundred .224" open point swaged bullets

Apologies for taking this thread sideways... more to the point, all I have in.45 cal half jackets are a few .452" pistol jackets, too small for 45-70 (.458")

i have 45-70 half jackets and would be able to make some, OP, feel free to contact me if interested.

Just a side note RCBS stands for Rock Chucker Bullet Swage. The first ones were made from Model T truck axles.
Copper tubing and blind caps can be had at any hardware store.

Phishroy,
I use two 40 year old Rock Chuckers and a new, old style, Lee Classic Cast. The dies are 40 year old C-H two die set, and the notching die is from BTSniper. Cannelure is made with an old C-H tool.
