Who cuts and rethreads ar barrels?

There may be some restriction when cutting an AR barrel. Contact ARWEN ACE here. He should be able to give you info and he's a master gunsmith to boot!
Post the response if you don't mind. I am thinking of doing this too.

Any competant gunsmith can cut and rethread the barrel of an AR,there is no restriction on barrel length of an AR up to 4.1 inches (from one of the RCMP drones at the CFC).

I just want to cut a 20 inch down to 16 inch. So this will be no problem. I wanted to see if someone eles has done this before and who was the gunsmith that did it and to see if they where happy with the work that was done. I thank you for the quick responce.

You should be aware that cutting the barrel down to less that 18.5" will change the rifle to a restricted firearm. Most of the gunsmiths that do this kind of work will know this already, but it is something to ask about.

not really an issue for ar-15 though, since its already restricted

I've looked into this issue a while back, and there really is no definitive answer as to the legality of doing it. Please note that the CFC site states:

Prohibited firearms include:

* rifles and shotguns that have been altered by sawing or other means so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm (about 18 inches) or their overall length is less than 660 mm (about 26 inches);

Which technically means(according to the CFC site) if you cut(saw) down an AR(rifle) barrel and that barrel ends up less that 457mm then you have a prohibited gun. Installing a <457mm factory AR barrel is perfectly legal.

FWIW there are some smaller gunsmith shops that do this work, and the alteration was verified by the CFC. I remember asking Prairie Gun Works about chopping an AR barrel and they have told me that besides the fact that it will ruin the chrome-lining, it is illegal to chop an AR barrel to less than 457mm. YMMV.

No an AR barrel has nothing to do with it's classification, it can be cut or replaced with a shorter barrel at any time... you have 30 days after the modification to inform the CFC on the change of barrel length. That is the bottom line...full stop.

Want to cut your barrel down to 16". Your in SW ontario, give Ellwood Epps a call. Ask for there gunsmith, Doug would be his name.

Any one can cut the barrel. Their are no legal issues in regards to restricted rifles. FYI if you cut a 20" down to 16" than you will probably have gas problems that will require opening up the gas port. This would be best left to someone with experience in this area.

But what about your registration certificate that gives the barrel length?

Do what I did and send a letter to the CFC telling them I was using a different barrel and in three years I have never gotten a response.

Or you could have a "Verifier" do a change of description Form 678 and CFC will re-issue a new ammended certificate fairly quickly :)

I just phoned them, new certs came in after a whle, then they just told me not to bother informing them (after 4 or so AR changes)...wonderful system we have.
