Who doesn't own a magnum & why?

I've put a poll on this to see exactly how many people own magnums and how many either eschew magnums or haven't saved up for their chosen one yet.
If you don't own a magnum please post and say why.
Personally I don't for 2 reasons.
Firstly I didn't have the money to buy one at the time they seemed appealing.
Secondly, for my own hunting needs they're unnecessary and while I'm sure I could find a reason for owning a magnum they're preached as the cure for most things, whether it be WSMs or the standard or long magnums, and I don't subscribe to that theory.
Plus, I'm a bit of a sucker for the older cartridges that provided excellent service before everyone in the gun magazines told us we needed a magnum to do the job.
I'm all in favour of using enough gun but I think the Europeans have the right approach.
They make seemingly pedestrian cartridges perform beyond the expected bounds.
It's a little like the way they use engine capacity to create bhp.
Buy an American 5.0 litre V8 and expect to have plenty of power.:rolleyes:
Buy an European 5.0 litre V8 and pack an extra pair of underpants!!:eek: :redface:
O.k., now I've nattered away.
Let's see some other views.

This proves my theory that people who do not own magnums suck at the internet... I am guessing you do not teach in a gifted school Kombi.:p ;)

I don't own one. I have an '06 wich is more than enough for my hunting needs. The word ''Magnum" is a marketing term more than anything else...

The term "magnum has been bashed around way too much lately!

I would guess you are talking about BIG magnums?

Concerning a belted magnum, no I do not own one.
However, i do own two 6.5wsm's ( one that is soon to be a WSSM)
and a 300WSM, non of which I consider true magnums.
I tend to throw them into the same bucket as the .222 Remington Magnum.

To me it used to be a belted case that designated the cartridge as a magnum, but these days we also have the NON BELTED magnums, such as the short mags,Ultra mags. and the lapua Magnum jiust to name a few!:confused:

This leaves simple people like myself way too confused!
The poll maybe could have read
" Do you own any cartridges that kick the bejeepers out of you?":D
That would be more accurate becuase if I load my 46/70 up with smokeless and a heavy bullet I am done for a few weeks with one shot
even though it is not a magnum !:confused:

But for the polls sake, I said "yes" because of the shortmags!:D

And let's face it, the word "magnum" these days does not mean what it originally did for cartridges.
It's closer to the reason the word was adapted from champagne bottles.....bloody big!:eek:
A RUM or Lapua may not have a belt but it's certainly a magnum.
So unless your magnum is a rimfire please choose one of the affirmative answers.:)
 
I have only had one, and the British would not even call it a magnum but a good medium bore, the classic 375 H&H. Too bad I didn't buy a gun that was as classic as the caliber or I'd still have it.:(

I am looking to get a 300 H&H, whether I build it out of one of my own or trip over another one, it will be more than enough for all I will chase on this continent.:p I mean, if Doug and SuperCub have one, shouldn't we all?

As for the modern magnums, they are only created to keep up the sales of firearms, for these whiz bang whipper snappers.:rolleyes:

Don't worry Kombi, let 'em at these new super duper whiz bang guns, it will only help the price of the classic ones stay where they are at instead of inflating further and further.;)

In North America, my 30-06 will dispatch any animal. Even my little 44 lever-action takes deer down with authority. A good gauge to observe is what sustenance hunters use. Most natives in the north use moderate calibres like .303, 30-30, and .308. They know how to shoot their guns, and that's what makes the difference. Plus...with magnums, you just burn a lot more powder to get there. Arguments welcome...just my $0.0174701 USD
 
Well I got by hunting everything with a .308 for a number of years. In a moment of weakness and a pocket full of money I got a good deal on a .30-.378 weatherby. I haven't shot anything with it yet (had it a year now) but no more worries about bullet drop during 350 yard shots across clear cuts and bogs.
 
My .308 and -06 provide all of the juice I seem to need.

My personal opinion is that one shouldn't shoulder-fire something that needs wheels.;)
 
I've never had a need for a cartridge that has magnum in its name or one that wears a belt. The only ones that interest me at all are the 375 H&H or the 44mag.

Alrighty then. I'm having a free draw for a .338 Lapua magnum. In order to conserve bandwidth, anybody who does not feel they need to have thier name in the draw, please post it here.

Good for all you non-magnum hunters. I've used most standard calibers over the years and they worked well enough. I now use nothing but magnums. There's no reason that a magnum has to weigh any more than a standard caliber, my .375 is 7 3/4 lbs scoped with sights. Strictly my preference and wide open to debate.
 
Over the years I have owned and shot many magnum cartiges but in the end the only one I have left is a .300 H & H that I had custom made. Magnums have their place but as I get older I find I do not enjoy the recoil as much. For my hunting conditions I prefer the standards-- .35 Whelen for heavy stuff, 7x57 for most deer hunting and my Savage 99's for variety.

I have been up that ladder and am now coming down the other side.

I started hunting big game with a 30-30. I moved up to a 30-06. Then in the "bigger is better" period of my early 20's I went from a 264WM to a 300WM to a 338 WM and finaly a 340 WBY. After packing that cannon of a Weatherby around for one season I came to understand 2 things 2 things: 1) The Weatherby was NOT fun to shoot; and 2) The animals were no "deader" than when I shot them with a 30-30

I sold my last Belted Magnum - a 338 WM - soon after I had my 338-06 built. I was only gaining an additional 60 - 70 yards extreme range with the belted round when compared to the "06 based 338. That final bit of range is not missed as I seldom shoot over 350 yards anyway.

i've got a 338 win mag and put maybe a dozen shots through it- it's just too damned expensive on powder- i got it for the really big bears back in the early 90's and never did go- the other mag is a 44- but we're not counting pistol cts, are we?if i'm hunting, the savage 99 fills the bill about 90 % of the time - with 180 grain slugs- basically a 2/3 magnum
