I own a couple of "magnums". Not because they're a magnum, but because I like the old classic calibers.

264WinMag and a 300H&H

I could live w/o magnums very easily, esp the WSMs. :D

That is interesting because when you think abotu it, the performance of the 300 H&H and the 300WSM is like two peas in a pod!:D :p

I'm thinking that my next magnum rifle will be a 375/338 Taylor.

Same performance as my 375 H&H, but in a smaller, lighter rifle, and a standard lenght action...;)

Might just rebarrel my Ruger 77 MKII, I probably won't have to change much as the bolt face will work fine..:D

Does .22 Magnum count? I got one of thoes. I don't like big rifle magnums like .300winmag ect. To big, ammo is expencice, and my .303Brit/.308 will do the job just fine.
Nope, it isn't really a magnum in this survey.

I really don't have ause for a Magnum, I hunt Elk and Dall sheep, a 30-06 does me just fine, about the closest to a magnum I will get is a 458 Lott, and that is olny if i ever get a chance for cape buffalo. Heck I use 45-70 for Bison here. Les

I do own 3 Magnums, but they see little use. Have owned a lot of 30 cal magnums over the years, and they do offer a bit of trajectory/energy advantage over the '06, but not enough to be seen in 98% of the shots taken at game. I still have a 30-338, which I will not get rid of. My 7mm Mag stays with me, since it is a great 1000 yard "hunter class" rifle, I have never even shot it at game, and have owned it for 12 years. The 264 is the third one and it is going to be sold shortly, cause I seldom use it, and for most of the times I have, the 270 would have done OK. Other I own? 222, 22-250, 220 Swift, 6mm Remington, 6.5 Swede, 6.5-284, 270 Win, 7x57, 300 Savage, 30-06, 30 Gibbs, 303 British, 8x57, 35 Whelen. Regards, Eagleye.

I can't find a use for one. I know a few capable guys who can use them, but I strongly suspect alot of folks would be better off learning to shoot a 30-06 or 280 effectively rather then jumping on the first short magnum that the sales man shows them. Guess it hard to resist all that BS marketing though.

burn about 55 grains of powder and you can Shoot lots, flinch little and learn to kill game with a rifle.

Maybe it is just that I am a cheap wimp who does'nt like the cost and the noise.

I have no need for a magnum.I can do everthing I want here in Ont with a non Magnum. If I lived in the western provinces I would be sure to own a Mag or two.

I'm not a big guy and don't have much meat on my shoulders . I've owned magnums but i shoot a lot , i mean a real lot and if i can't enjoy it over an afternoon of shooting , it's not for me . Also most of the game i shoot is at fairly short ranges so i don't need to reach way out .

Nothing against magnums, just no need for one. Like ATR said, I shoot lots, so I like to keep it fun (and cheap).

For hunting, .303 or 8mm handloads kill moose/caribou dead. I usually encounted Moose at distances where a good arm could pelt them with rocks.

The more I read of this thread, the more this view seems to be common.
Don't get me wrong.
Lot's of guys own magnums but a reasonable number don't use them a whole lot.
I don't doubt there are guys that shoot out to 300 yards on a regular basis but there doesn't seem to be so many of them.
And there's only just over 10% who have lots of magnums because they don't have a big...............car.:p :D

The reason I own a 22/250 instead of a 222 is to reach out further. The reason I own a magnum of a given caliber is to hit harder and crush more bone as a non magnum of the same calibration...Your right,I've never shot an animal with a super umpum cartridge that a standard one wouldnt do. I've just had the piece of mind of watching the animal shut off like he had a switch on him.

I voted Nope, but like others I really don't have anything against them.

I recently just upgraded from my 300 Savage and 303 Parker Hale to a Win70 30-06. I sold the Savage, the 303 is for sale right now on the EE. For years, the 300 and 303 served me very well so I think the 30-06 will have plenty of jam for the hunting I do.

Also just upgraded my 22semi to a WMR to take care of the grounhogs on my proerty - now the 22 semi is for sale on EE.

For birds/rabbits, I have a 16 ga Mossberg bolt that I'll never part with, So, to make a long-story-short, right now I guess I can say that I have all I need for the hunting that I do.

Eventually though, I plan on starting a collection of lever guns and I don't expect any of them to be magnums. I would like to get both the Win94 Big Bores in 307 and 356. Then I want a Marlin 336ER in 356, a 336 in 30-30 and a Win94 in 30-30. Then I'm gonna try to get my 300 Savage back and then maybe get hold of of 99 in 308. Then I should be done.

Suprisingly, my buddies 270wsm has the same shoulder punch as my .308

Those short rounds have lots of bite down range but way more bark.:)

Yea, but a WSM is not a "classic" caliber and therefore lacks cool factor!! :D

I just wanted to shed some light on this subject. I like to use magnuns because they work better. I don't say you need a .338 for deer but when I hit a deer with mine it goes down. Theres no blood trail or fallowing it up, its laying where I shot it. When I travel 1000 miles to hunt Elk and spend a week in spike camp and finally see a nice bull at a bad angle at 300 yds. I know my .416 will put him down. I don't have a problem with people useing whatever they like but don't try to say a small gun kills as good as a big one. If this were the case we could all hunt with a 243 and hope for broadside lung or head shots. I might add that I think the really usefull mags start at 300 or 338 and go up. Again not slamming standard calibers at all just pointing out that bigger is better.
