Who else has a Ross converted to 7mm rem mag?

Years ago I wanted to about duplicate a 280 ross, and I had a Mk 3 that the barrel was toast. I had a gunsmith install and chamber a 7mm barrel, and for convenience I made it a 7mm rem mag. I got a walnut sporter stock, and I shoot it for fun once in a while. It is a bit heavy, but pretty well balanced. As it turns out this rifle will not handle the hottest 7 mag loads, I presume that is because of the barrel and chamber, not because of the action. The straight pull action works perfectly and feeds like a machine gun. Surely I do not have the only one.

I have a few cut down sporter Ross’s I plan to make into nicer sporters in the future. Actually my plan was to build three, I’d like to chamber them in 7mm rem mag, 375h&h, 338 win mag or some other big bore.
I do have a factory Ross sporter in 303 and plan to duplicate the stock for my builds.

Do you have any pics of your rifle 22to45?

When you said it will not handle "the hottest" loads what issues did you run into?
I have a Ross or two but not in anything other than 303. Regretting not picking up a few factory sporters in either that or 280 I had the chance to over the years, they're fantastic rifles. Both the Mk.II and Mk.III

. As it turns out this rifle will not handle the hottest 7 mag loads, I presume that is because of the barrel and chamber, not because of the action.

Why do you “ presume” this? And what do you mean by will not handle?

Always been very interested in the idea of converting a 280 to a belted magnum

There was a now deceased local gunsmith in East Van who made at least one for himself.

I'm thinking a Ross should handle 7mm mag loads with
no problems. Certainly strong enough.

I acquired a 1910 Ross a few years ago on a trade deal.
It sat for a while, and then I dug it out and cleaned it up.

It was in decent shape with the exception of the bore. Too
much corrosive 303 ammo without proper cleanup had it
looking somewhat like a stovepipe. Shot like that as well,
with groups around 6 moa and the odd keyhole.

I ordered up a barrel with the original contour and had
Dave Jennings Fit it and blue it up. It is a McGowen, .311
groove, 9½" twist, 26" long.

It sure shoots now! Regularly sub-moa with several loads.
I have worked up to 308 Winchester loads without any issues.

Thumped a whitetail a couple of years ago. 180 Pro-Hunter
4x grains of IMR 4320. Worked just great! Dave.

^ I covet that gun

I love vintage sporting rifles based on military actions, the more obscure the better.

But my obsessive nature wants that perfect factory chamber…

A 280 sporter redone to 338 wm is on the list for sure. Better do it before all the gunsmiths who know what they’re doing retire

I'd love to see pics of this. I'm looking to do a similar build.

I had another 7mm rem mag, and it was wonderful in terms of handling hot loads. I could get an honest 3000 ft per second out of it, with 175 gr bullets, and CF7900 powder I bought bulk at higginson powders. This rifle tops out at about 2900 with the same powder and bullets, and same barrel length, so I presume the barrel is a bit tighter than the other, or the throat is a bit shorter.

Since The rebore/rebarrel crowd are present, I have a factory ‘05 R in .35 Winchester. The barrel is a 3TPI now 20 “ long and bulged (sigh). (Should make a good poker for the stove). I am wondering if any of y’all have ever had a .303 (.311”) rebored/chambered to .35 Win. (.358).
Only 47 thou (before pitting) to play with.
Have a couple of 26” (.303) military barrels (”sammy same” as as the factory .35s) and it would be an “easy resto” albeit non original.
Making a new barrel from scratch is more than the value of the rifle but a R 05 in .35 would be a peach in the brush.
Thanks in advance.

I sent him mine in the hopes I could post them here :dancingbanana:

Definitely worth your time to contact Bob Jury in Red Deer about the potential rebore

Edit:

Some pictures. It seems whoever makes a magnum Ross it always has a “ funky” stock

Anyone remember that 300 win with the baseball glove stock someone found in a storage unit years back? Can’t find the thread

2900 with 175's is plenty hot for a 7 RM. - dan

This rifle came to me as barreled action, and I bought the inletted blank I could. That is maple and ebony stock tip a Luther buddy made for me, and a home made cross bolt and picatinny rail, as the fitted Leopold rail cracked. It has a Simmons aetec scope. It also has a home made butt pad.
