Just wondering who else besides myself is using a 28 gauge for hunting.

If so what do you hunt and what do you use for a 28 gauge shotgun?Of late I have been using a 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 for partridge and rabbits.

I use a 28 Gauge Cynergy Feather for grouse, Hungarian partridge and pheasant.

where do you find ammo?

If you can't find 28gauge ammunition, you aren't looking very hard. I prefer the Fiocchi Golden Pheasant loads, which I buy from Prophet River, and the price is comparable to the same loads in 12,or 20 gauge.

aint nothing 28 can do that a 20 cant

Using that reasoning, there is nothing that a 20 gauge can do, that a 12 gauge can't.

Use my 687 28 for all upland and it has quickly become my favorite shotgun. We walk for miles for pheasant but especially sharp tails and a 5 pound shotgun is just the ticket.

Cooey SS as well folds grouse and pigeons cleanly out to 40yards.Ammo at any sporting goods store...........Harold

Is there really any other gauge? I have been using the 28 for all my upland hunting now for at least five years, I also use it for occasional trap sessions at the club. I don't regret leaving the 12 at home at all. I hunt over two wonderful pointers, and chasing them over hill and dale makes me really appreciate the lightweight and fast handling characteristics of my little Savage Milano over and under.

For ammo I really like the Winchester AA in a 3/4 oz load with 7.5 shot for almost all my hunting. I also reload my own ammo, and while I do have a couple of different loads, I usually try to duplicate the Winchester loads because they work so well for me out of my little Savage. I tried some Remington STS Premier, and while I find they work great for woodcock, I find the smaller shot these are usually available in a little too small for grouse and pheasant. Plus the hulls are not nearly as easily reloaded with my MEC 600 JR as the AA hulls are so I have avoided them of late.

I am headed out this weekend for my last hunt of the year for grouse, cant wait to light up the Milano one more time before heading to the club for trap!

I love the 28 gauge. I had a gorgeous Wingmaster built on the 28 ga frame and I sold it off in a moment of weakness. Well I have managed to locate another and will have it home very shortly. It is a very elegant little cartridge and loads of fun to shoot. Great for upland and a hoot on the skeet field. Factory ammo is expensive but I spend much more on guns, clothing, equipment, opportunity cost of not being at work; its worth it!

I am using a sweet little Wingmaster 870LW 28ga with a skeet choke on cottontails...I am really attache dto this gun now, love everything about it.

I shoot the cheapest shells I can find which run about $11.99 to $14.99 a box, Challenger #8's from Cabelas Canada or Winchester AA #7.5 from BassPro in the States.

:) indeed
your experiences intrest me since im in a market for a smaller ga shotty, need something that wont go bang too loud around kids in woods, but will take grouse and bunnies at a fair distance, im set on 20ga just cause .410 seems too small and bit short on range, and anything in between is just too hard to find at your local gun shop, and i dont want to look too hard for ammo i need

I have a single shot Cooey 84 in 28 gauge i use for rabbits.

As for ammo, i picked up a few boxes at Gagnon's in Oshawa.

My first firearm was a 28 gauge Winchester/Cooey Model 84.Great shotguns.Still have mine and every so often I take it out for a hunt. That 28 gauge Model 84 still works as well as it did new back in the 1960's.

Back when the shotgun was new I used the old orange 28 gauge paper C-I-L Imperial shells and number six shot.Still have a box or two of those old shells.Still smell as good as ever when fired.

I LOVE my 28!!! I have a CZ Bobwhite and it has been amazing for rabbits and grouse. I have been running #9 in the first barrel and #7.5 high brass in the second. It is so nice to carry and so much faster than my 12 gauge. I have been able to hit lots of running rabbits and flushing grouse with it.

I just got a box of Winchester 1 oz loads in #8 and am looking forward to see how it patterns. Have any of you guys tried the 1 oz loads in 28?

Hello oneskilledshooter.I have used the 28 gauge one ounce loads before. They have patterened well in all the 28 gauge shotguns I have tried them in.The 28 gauge one ounce loads I used were loaded with number 6 and 7 1/2.

My cz redhead mini's in 28 & 410 are my go to guns for grouse and rabbits, love the mini version I can carry them all day long. I've got the red head line up in every gauge and really like that cz offers the mini recievers for it smaller gauges. Definetly worth looking at

I might be able to lay my hand on one or two. ;)

Wingmaster with the briley choke tubes has always been my favorite but I think that new model 37 or franchi Al48 are going to give it a run. I use 28ga for everything but duck & goose hunting and the odd trip with the 16ga.
Happy New year by the way.

On yes had /have some winchester 1oz no. 6 also over the years
Checking out a Akkar 300 pump next

Have not seen one of the Savage 220 shotguns in 28 gauge.Must be a nice little shotgun. What will you use it for?

I grew up hauling my mothers remington model 812 around. Great cartridge. Great little gun. It's not in great shape anymore and though i'll never sell it, it doesn't get much use. :( I'd like to find another one or even a sxs in 28 sometime in the future. For now i'm stuck with my 16 gauge wingmaster. It does the job just fine but there is something about a nice light 28 gauge that i love.
