Who Else is Using a 28 Gauge for Hunting

About 15 or twenty years ago there were some quail released in my area.I remember even seeing a couple of broods one year.Had one living behind my house for a summer,a winter and another summer. After that I never saw it again.I suppose the cold winter could have got it or perhaps an owl or hawk.Never saw quail around any where in my area after that winter.

Too bad they did not take.Would have been a good game bird to hunt with my 28 gauge.

BGB ,did you see the post on the 28 Gauge Society Site about the fellow using a 28 gauge CZ for quail out in Washington State in the US.He is having a lot of success and really loves his 28 gauge CZ.

sure did - as I'm sure you noticed by now. I LOVE quail hunting with my 28. It's perfect, as 3Macs said. It's great to hunt wild birds, too. Nothing like flushing a flock of 40+ quail, then tracking down the singles!

Yes BGB ,quail hunting with the 28 gauge seems quite a sport.Would love to have a go at it myself.None in my area however.

What is your 28 gauge shell and shot size of choice for hunting them?

Agree they are a real cool bird and some hard to hit when they flush especially wild ones. I think here it is all about the fact we just don't have the grass lands they need to survive. I remember there was some wild ones left in a part of ontario at the time but I think they are all just about gone now too but could be wrong.
My Britts are out of Quebec and there parents trained on quail and pheasants. I tried training them with pigeons and they would not touch them so I was forced to raise quail and pheasants. 1st dozen pair came out of a farm in Ontario and out of 24 four made it through the 1st winter. Heard about a guy in NS raising them and into Britts and bought 6 pair from him. It was like they had adapted to our NS harsh winters and I never lost a bird. They grew to over 200 a year since I would hatch out 3 times.
They are perfect for dog training. I had what they call Johnney houses out where I would work the dogs. Take 12 out of the pen set them for the dogs work the dogs and go home. Next day all 12 would be back in the johnney house to come back to the pen.
I would keep maybe 75 over the winter and lose maybe one or two. The ones I didnot shoot or get away I may see for 2 years max in the wild then gone. Even seen one hen one year with chicks but no sir didnot make it. Another problem was the pen raised were too tame and foxes, hawks etc would just tear them apart.take care

I just used my skeet no. 9 loads when working them with the dogs and it was fine.

Some old pics of ther boys hatching, might be a big as a quarter and I would say this guy would be about 1week. F'K I miss them around.

I just use the cheapest target loads I can find with No. 8 shot. seems to be the most common 28 gauge ammo I see in the stores. I have used 9 or 7 1/2 in a pinch.

I guess the closest thing you`d have to quail in NS would be the Hungarian (gray) partridge... not sure if there`s even any huntable numbers there anymore. I think they`re still doing OK in PEI, but I had to come west to shoot my first huns

Yes sir. Don't remember the last time I seen hungarians in my area of NS must be 25 years ago. See them in PEI goose hunting for sure. take care

My NIB pre J-lock 870 Wingmaster 28ga just arrived today from Prophet River. Got her put together but won't be able to shoot it for a while. She looks good though, I love these little guns! :)

Yes, I found it on Gunbroker in UT and bought it at the end of Nov. Prophet River took care of the import for me. These are so much nicer than the current private equity garbage. The bluing, wood, polishing of the internals and overall fit & finish suggest an entirely different gun/manufacturer vs the Wingmasters of today.

I was very lucky to find one NIB,

Patrick

Cool. You sure were lucky to find a vintage one NIB. I have probally a 1970 factory skeet and agree on the fit and finish it is so smooth it will almost pump itself.

Enjoy it

J-locks were an abortion of a safety mechanism that Remington started putting on their firearms in 2004-2005. It kind of marked the downturn in Remington quality and from the dozen or so Remington's I have bought in the last few years I try and find pre J-lock guns as much as possible.

It didnot last long .I seen it also and when that seller says it is mint it is. He has some nice stuff
The 28ga wingmaster and express on the EE were all within 12 hours won't see that again for a while if ever

Wonderful. I really wish I had seen that ad sooner.
