Who F****d with my Smith?

Well it's prolly like your first car - it might have been beater but it was yours and it gave you freedom. I'm thinking that this gun was kinda like that in that it was 'my' first and not anyone elses.

I've spent alot of time on the internet today and read alot about S&W and the 29/629 but one of the more interesting reads was by John Taffin.

On the other hand it's kind of sad that a company like S&W can put cost cutting above the quality of the product. After all they are a big company, that produces a lot of guns and have alot of customers. This is not a knockoff gun, this is the 'original' and as such they *should* offer a quality product for quality money.

my 2 cents

For the price of a New 44 Classic you might as well buy one from the late 50's pre 29 or 29 no-dash into early 60's if you can find one theres were the quality was put into a real genuine 44 S&W. Ever since some British Company "Something Tompkins" that took over S&W in the 90's there workmanship and quality control went down the crap pipe.

Todays S&W Handguns have to many MIM Parts and the ugly Hillary Hole to boot LOL. Myself i prefer the old ones over the new ones any day.

The Model 629 Classic has the full underlug barrel. There have also been Model 29 Classics made with the lugged barrel.

Confusingly enough, S&W uses the "S&W Classics" name to refer to a series of recently introduced guns that have traditional styling: blued or nickel finishes, half lug barrels, etc. The latest iteration of the Model 29, with a 6-1/2" half-lugged barrel is most correctly referred to as simply the Model 29.

Well I got some good news for all you fellers following this thread -

I got a 629-1 TODAY!!!

Believe it or not, late July of this year I stride into my local dealer and I says 'I want a 629 sir jus' like the good ol' days!' The friendly salesguy says 'certainly sir' and calls up his distributor immediately. Well it turns out that he doesn't have any 629's and he’s not sure when he will get some. So I says 'well can you order me one please? cuz' I'm sure that due to the massive popularity of this fine gun it won't take long at all!’

Days turn into weeks, which turn into months, when finally on Oct 5, my friendly sales guy phones me up and says 'Sir - GOOD NEWS your gun is in!' I says 'GREAT! do the paperwork and I shall be in forthwith and posthaste to pick it up!' Well as you know fellow Canadians, the wait for the ATT can be anywhere from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks. So as you can imagine I wasn't thinking about the turkey dinner that we had that weekend, so much as I was dreaming of hand numbing, ear shattering, full house loads impacting violently on unsuspecting pieces of paper at the other end of our range.

So this brings us up to last Tuesday when friendly sales guy again calls me up and says 'GOOD NEWS - your ATT is in!' and again I says 'Great! I'll be in tomorrow to pick this fine piece of weaponry!'

OK - this brings us to the start of this thread as I slowly realize that the Smith of today is not as good as the Smith of yesteryear.

Bla bla bla...

So I'm surfing the web indulging in copious amounts of self pity when I happen by this link:

Christmas again? the day after I picked up the new one?

So today I strode into my friendly neighborhood gun dealer and said 'Sir, may I have a look at that gun I saw on your webpage?' He said sure - 'I kinda figured that you would be interested in this!'

So long story short (pun implied) I bought the gun. The story behind the story is that the original owner was a bit of a collector and he has decided to broker his collection and he had doubles of everything. So while I didn't quite get the gun that is pictured in the link, I got it's mate, and from what I can tell, while it has been shot, it has been very little, and I'm hoping that it can give me the enjoyment that I had with my first Smith, lo those many years ago...

I have a older 629 without the full under lug it and it has a very smooth trigger shoots great my freind has a new 629 and it is not as smooth but looks very nice maybe they have to be shot a 1000rds to get smooth?

I own a 1990 made 629 Classic, 5inch, full lug, round butt.
It certainly seems to take more concentration, and a slightly different grip, to shoot it as well as any of my N-frames with the traditional square butt.

I also have a 1985 made S&W 624, (square butt) that shoots circles around the magnum, with less effort it seems to me.
So knowing these facts, I concur with the OP to this thread.

I also have a N frame 27 shoots as nice as the 629 maybe the square butt is the way to go, I can shoot both of them better that my colt Trooper or my Taurus.
I really like My Smiths
