Just wondering if anyone had a chance to look at the 5 th edition of Robert W D Balls book "Mauser Military Rifles of the World"?

I am looking for a Review of this edition from other Mauser collectors.

I see its out in hard cover.
Who is carrying it in Canada, at a reasonable price?

Cabelas has it. Ive only looked briefly but I didn't notice much new content relative to the 4th edition.

I picked it up from chapters for $34..... I've not seen any previous editions, though I find it ~mildly~ useful... some interesting facts, some neat pictures, some poor pictures. In most cases it usually falls short on the details, I find every time I'm looking for a specific bit of info - I wind up on wikipedia..... interesting coffee table gun #### mostly.

It is a very good book as it covers a very wide range of Mauser rifles. There are some variants I have never heard of but I am glad I know what to look for if I happen to bump into one. Many of the photos are in colour as well.

Each rifle has quick reference specifications at the end of each written section that includes measurements, caliber, specific marking identification...etc that can be used to I.D. a particular rifle. Don't expect a huge amount of information for a specific rifle as detail gives way to quantity in the book. Some rifles, like the Mauser 1871, are given more space than others though.

It is well worth the money if you are a Mauser rifle collector.

I think it's a great book for a Mauser or general milsurp collector, with lots of great pictures and info about many rare models, but any book tackling such a broad subject can only be an overview. Don't expect a lot of detail on individual models. I'd call it a buy, espescially at that price (cheap for a gun book), but with the caveat that if you already have the 4th edition it's not really worth upgrading.

i think it is a must have, obviously there are better books on specific areas (ie swede, argentine, yugo, and german rifles).

the pages near the back on captured rifles are interesting. the P14 is called "Ross-Enfield 14" from latvia and the M17 is "Rifle Ross cal 30 model 1917". there is also a belgian "Ross-Enfield" in 7.92 mauser.

i think i bought my copy for $32 on amazon. i was upgrading from the 2nd edition so well worth the price.

I like visual books, I can learn so much from a picture then the text.
I have picked up some great guns by visually inspecting, and comparing them to the book.
The Mauser book by Ball is a quick reference, and ID book.
I sent a message to Mike Steves I am on a waiting list for two Mauser books, one book I think is the Kriegsmodell, is going to be reprinted and there is a new Mauser book coming out.
Joe Salter bought most of Robert Ball's collection last year or the year before.
He bought my collection of Martinis, Sniders a few others, a few years back.
