Anyone in Sask have the Remington .35 Whelen? I would like to travel to your nearest range and shoot a few rounds through this gun to see if I might like to buy one for myself. PM me so we can arrange details. Thanks guys.

I'm in central AB and if you want to travel here to shoot my 35 Whelen, buy some tax free goods and cheap gas, PM me and we will set it up.
Shoots as flat as a laser, hits like a freight train and recoil like a 22LR.

There is a friend of mine in Weyburn who has one in a Rem 7600. You can Pm me if ya want, and in the mean time I can contact him about borrowing the gun.He is a good guy and I cannot see him having a problem letting you shoot his rifle.I have a range out here where I live , tho it may be a bit tough to get to now that we have snow , but we will just have to see!!!!!!!!!!

If you're in Edmonton and want to try one, let me know.

Or, just go buy one. Especially if you're thinking about it. It's a true classic. A friend of mine borrowed mine to kill a 1,400 lb bison two years ago. One shot, 150 yards, 250 grain Nosler, the thing walked ten feet, very dead bison. He says: "Hey, this thing's got no recoil !"

You'll like it.

Thanks for the offers guys. I usually make a couple of trips a year to the Peace region so probably will contact either JohnnyJ or A-zone towards spring. Probably pick up a couple boxes of ammo (whatever you use) and you can have whatever is left.....should be around 38. OK? Bearcat thanks also...Weyburn is a bit out of my usual Sask travel routes though.

I bet a 30/06 loaded with a stiff 220gr load would be pretty close to a Whelen, recoils wise that is. Why not try that instead?

Or if you're in my neck of the woods, you can give my 7600 a go.

BTW ..... I haven't got around to getting the recoil pad on it yet :)

Good idea Supercub. A quick look at Wholesale shows that only Sierra, Hornady and Nosler Partitio come in 220 grains now. Better smattering of 200 grainers.
Guess I will have to go on a shopping road trip for more ammuntion components.

I have a friend that has one in meadow lake. great gun, nice shooter. If your up there let me know. He wouldn't mind i am sure. He could also steer you onto some good loads for it!

Trouble with the '06 and 220's, they are usually about 2350 in factory loads and can make 2500 in reloads, whereas the Whelen will make 2600+ with a 250 grain bullet. Recoil is a bit heftier with the 35. Regards, Eagleye.

My 35 Whelen(Rem 7600) likes the Hornady 250 gr SP with 60.0gr of RL15 and measured velocity is 2600 to 2650 fps.
The first 3 shots measure about .75" center to center.
Check the external ballistics on the above bullet and you will see it does very well.
I'm impressed with the performance that the 35 Whelen has to offer both in terms of power and range.
According to Alliant's info, 59.5 gr of RL-15 is the top/max load. See this link:

Good Luck

Boomer 2,
Where are you at? I have a 7600 in .35 Whelen in Saskatoon if you want to take a few cracks. Bring your own Asprin though, it is a little pushy with 250s. 200's are really tame though.

When bench shooting 250gr loads in my 7600 (off the bags only), after firing, it will actually open the action and eject the empty about five feet from the bench, without me working the action. It only opens the action with 200gr loads.

Does yours do this as well?

My 7600 unlocks the action with my 250gr loads and does not come anywhere close to spitting out the empty.
I have two of them in 35 whelen and one in 338-06 Imp and neither will eject the empty.

Supercub,
My 7600 will sometimes open the action if I am holding onto the fore-end, but not far enough to eject the empty. While bench shooting I don't hold the front and it doesn't happen. This is shooting 250 grain handloads, the 200s are a pushover. (30-06 recoil) My seventeen year old Remmy is still tight after all this time and I don't oversize the cases. Factory loads might be different since they eject easier. You can't tell from my experience since I only shot about 3 boxes of Remingon 200 grainers at the beginning to get brass. Since they didn't shoot worth a crap it has been handloads ever since.
