Who has a Steyr HS50?

I'm still saving but I think I will go with the single-shot. I mean it is $2k cheaper than the M1. lol.

I like my single shot and wouldn't bother getting the mag fed version. If you really want a mag fed then go up to a PGW or Cadex. That being said the HS50 holds it's own just fine as a target 50.

The muzzle brake. Yes you do get a slap in the face from the concussion. But it doesn't take long before you don't even notice it. At least for me it didn't. Personally I'd save the money on replacing the brake and go with a Spuhr mount that had build in moa as the rail on the HS50 is 0 moa.

The trigger is two stage. I like the one on mine. Also the pistol grip is AR. I went with magpul miad but would likely go ergo if changing it today. Just keep in mind that you need a pistol grip that has the option of no beaver tail unless you want to do some carving to make it fit.

The HS50 is a great option. I also like that it's a bullpup.

^The M1 has 20moa rail, but I'd get the Sphur mount for it regardless.

I plan to change the pistol grip to a BCM Mod 0.

I wouldn't get the M1. The Cadex Tremor is the route I would go if I wanted a mag fed rifle. I like the HS50 but that M1 has too much crud added to it and the side mag system does seem like an after thought. For the price, I think you can do better if going for a mag fed. For a single shot you can find some good deals when the HS50 shows up on the EE . As a single shot it's a very nice rifle.

BCM mod 0. Worth a try I guess. I'm looking at changing my MIAD to an ergo like the one that came with my Cadex stuff. Also a bit more comfortable than hard plastic when shooting a 50BMG, even though recoil isn't bad. My only concern with the BCM is it's more vertical profile. I don't know how it will work out for trigger positioning or comfort etc with the big 50. The plus side, is if you don't like it on the HS50 then it's a good justification to build another AR!

An armourer friend of mine told me that during routine training, Canadian Forces members are advised to limit practice to 10 .50 BMG rounds per day to reduce risk of retinal detachment from the recoil. I rarely shoot my .50 more than 10-20 rounds per session anyway.

Check out ATRS (a CGN site sponsor) - I believe they recognized the issue with the muzzle break on the HS 50 and provide a solution.

Peter

Yup that was the standard.

Well I'm a big Steyr fan with the HS it will be 3rd one in the collection. Hope to visit the factory in Austria as well in the near future.

Thought about getting the Ergo grip (with the palm shelf) as well but I have BCM on my AR so I'll be more familiar with it.

Well, My first AR308 target rifle I had a "target pistol grip" with the shelf. Looked really cool, very PSG1 style which I was after. But.. I hated it. I found a regular pistol grip without the shelf to be much more comfortable. I replaced that grip as soon as I could. No regrets. I would suggest trying one before buying. You might find like I did that it's not worth it. Then again it might work for you, maybe I was the exception?

$65USD is a bit too much for me to try. Besides I was told that you're not really using pressure to grip the pistol grip anyway when you're doing long distance shooting.

I thought it looked really cool as well but like you I question if the palm shelf has any real benefits.

Ergo grips are pretty sweet for target rifles. They are fatter than a BCM, which is nice. I run BCM grips on my AR's, but I did have an ergo on one of my target guns (not with the palm shelf). I have a new rifle on the way that happens to have an ergo with a palm shelf, so I'll see what it's about.

I will have a BCM around as well, so I may need to compare and see which I prefer.

Absolutely. The fatter grip works really well for ensuring the trigger squeeze is straight back and smooth. I use a thicker grip on my target rifles compared to my carbines.

This might be the better/cheaper option then... but it's not available from Brownells.

That's the one. The same one that came with my Cadex Chassis and my Cadex guardian 308 rifle. I'll be putting one of those on my HS50 eventually.

The HS-50 on the far right is mine. You can't see it very well but it currently has the Magpul MIAD with the thickest grip. It works decently but I will still be going to the Cadex.

Canadian Army Vet: "I've heard this rumor regarding the .50 mcmillan. Never from a reliable source. 50bmg did that then you'd think sustained use of 12g, .338 would eventually do the same thing."

US Gun Collector: "In that case, I should be totally blind be now. Hell, I've done 200 rounds in a single shooting."

Friend: "That's the political term for " we are broke"....!"

Maybe the American wasn't shooting a bolt gun? I've done 200 rounds in a single shooting too...but it was belt fed and mounted to a pretty solid tripod.

A little anti climatic to be honest, but it was kind of neat watching the tracer and knocking down tank-size steel gongs from a mile away.

Epoxy7, how do you find the recoil on you Steyr? I've never shot it myself, but I don't find the recoil that bad in the LRT-3.

I've got a pal that's shot both and he said that he can definitely feel a difference as the shooter, so one of these days we'll have to do a 50 shoot and do a little comparing ourselves.
