Who has actually taken game with a 30-30?

Shot my first deer with one when I was 15. 75yrds out the window of Dad's old powerwagon.

Oh wait a minute. I mean it was running away at about 300yrds, with a 30 mile an hour crosswind. Got it right at the last minute as it jumped the fence. Right in the neck where I was aiming. Yessiree, bob! :p

My brother used one of mine this year to take a Mulie buck at 200 yards and a white tail at 75 yards. A speer 170g flat point and enough R15 to make it go 2200fps. The mulie was hit perfectly 1/4ing away, through ribs and out the far leg/sholder junction. It started to make it's way to the tree line and I put it down with a 200g accubond from a M48 mauser. The white tail was hit facing staight on and droped about ten feet from where it was standing. Found the bullet lodged backwards in the bone on the hind leg about an inch from the hip socket. Bullet did not open up much, problably supun around backwards after hitting the sternum. The speer is a little to stiff a bullet for the 30-30 and I think it would work best in the 307. Speer claimes it is designed for an impact velocity between 1600-2400fps. I cut one in half and it has a fairly thick jacket. I am guessing at 30-30 velocity it will go through a buck broad side almost every time, even sholder bones. I have tested it an it goes deep, and on game it seems to penetrate every time.

A whitey buck at Aprox 75 yards, with a Marlin loaded with 170gr Winchester factory ammo (silvertips?). My brother in laws (2) and father in law swear by the round. The old man has had his 30-30 for 40 years and has dropped a deer with it every year, also dropped a couple of moose (not sure how many). The brother in laws have dropped atleast 10 whitey's (that I've seen). I hate to admit it, (I'm a 270 bolt fan), but the 30-30 lever (most makes) make a nice carry gun; short and well balanced. Plus there is lots of dropping power (like a old Buick, slow and steady).

About 6 deer and 1 moose with a win.94 and whatever 170 grainers K-Mart had on at the time.

Five of the deer dropped where I shot them, all within 100 yards. I don't recall recovering any bullets. The 3030 with it's specifically designed bullets seems to penetrate very well at it's moderate velocity.

The one deer I didn't drop had been previously wounded. (back leg busted and dangling) I made a desperation shot at about 200 yards and got it.

The Moose was a broadside shot at about 50 yards. The moose stumbled about 30 yards and piled up, not unlike if it had been hit with a 30 06.

The one time I really wished I had something else is one hunt where I'd just cleared the timber and spotted a huge buck watching me on an adjacent ridge some 300 meters away.

I have a good friend up here who has killed a pile of moose with a 30-30 and factory ammo. He always waits until he has a broadside shot, and almost always it is a one-shot kill. 8)

He has told me, however, that he has let a lot of moose go, because he could not get the shot he wanted, or was too far away.

I've taken two whitetail bucks, the 1st was with Win.170 gr Silvertips at approx. 137yds,the 2nd was with Hornady 170gr FN in front of 33.0grs H335 at 40yds.

I shot my first buck in 1995, a 2x2 mulie, with a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 Win. One shot at 30 yards folded the buck like a dirty shirt. 170 gr. Sierra ProHunter handload.

I think I shot a porcupine once too, with a 165 gr. X flatnose :D

I have a freind up here who has been trapping almost his whole life.
\He owns a shot gun, a Savage 340 in .222, and a 340 in 30/30.
He maintains that "anything more than a so/so is a waste of meat"!
Shoots factory ammo, shoots them inside 100 yards or so, and as far as I know has never neededa second shot to put one down!

Takes a while to get the shot sometimes, but he doesn't mind....
