Looking at the Buffalo Classic .45-70, looks like a great value. Anyone shot one or own one? Accuracy and opinions?

Lastly, anyone know if the 500gr Lee Spitzer will stabilize out of a standard .45-70 twist rate (whatever that may be haven't checked)? I know the 550gr flat points are no problem, but never thought about the spitzers.

The H&R I shot was a good rifle as far as accuacy goes.
Offhand I was able to hold 1/2" with it at 100.
We use the Lee 500 grainers in our newer 1885's so they should be okay.

I have one, it's great. Tons of fun. Longer barrel produces better velocities & great accuracy with the long sight radius and peeps.

Personally, I prefer it to the lever guns, a big butch single-shot just seems more appropriate somehow.

It drives 440gr cast to 2000fps with lever gun load data. I haven't tried the Ruger loads with it. Although it leads pretty badly at those speeds.

Normally, I prefer shooting 300gr Remington bulk jacketed. I got a screaming deal on a bunch of these and at 2400 fps or so, it's plenty flat enough to ring the 200m gong with real AUTHORITY.

1 1/2" is still plenty good for me, and you're one of the few on this site I'd buy 1/2 MOA from. :D

Fantastic, and it's a damn bargain with the sights it has, let alone the gun itself, really slick. Meant to buy it today but got sidetracked, tomorrow. I hope to shoot it pretty far with casts and 500gr spitzers, wouldn't mind seeing if I can ring gongs at 500 yards with it.

I don't believe that the sights that come on them will allow enough travel for the trajectory necessary for long range work with 500+ gr. bullets at black powder velocities.....around 350" at 500 yds....I don't know if there is room/provision for tang sights.

Good to know, and the drop with my load is 150" at 500 yards according to the ballistics calculator.

Your right, they won't reach out to 500.
A tang can be mounteed, but it takes some doing.

Yes I seen quite afew popping up at CAS matches for the Long Range Team events and such.
There is no "tang" on the reciever so it requires notching the stock for the sight base and screwing it to the wood....not ideal but the ones I seen seemed to work plenty good enough ;)
There are also outfits that make a "replacement" rear sight for the Buffalo Classics.....it's a flip up ladder type, that mounts in the stock location for those that don't like the look of a rear Vernier style screwed to the stock.

Another simple & popular mod is to deactivate the ejector spring so the brass doesn't shoot out and remove your eyeball.

This what i did with mine!
Parker H rear on her and it does shoot 1" groups with my casts

Was an intresting thought at the time!!??

About the only thing I didn't like on mine was the rear sight. I think if it could be replaced with a decent rear aperture for not too much $$, I would go that way. Mine also is a tack driver. I used 350 Hornadies and also some home cast 405's and it seems to shoot everything very well -- even the factory 300 JHP's. A pad on the butt stock would make it a little more plesaant to shoot with the heavier loads. (I know -- I'm a wimp. )
