I was at the Alberta Fish and Game conference this past weekend down in Red Deer and part of the one evening was a live auction of several "bigger" items. There were 2 hunts to Africa auctioned off that seemed to go over very poorly. I have spent most of my holidays for the year and most of my play budget to buy up all the handguns before the liberals were going to ban them so I did not bid up too high but after looking at the outfitters websites the final price was way below what the market value was. My question is how much does an Africa hunt interest you. I would have loved it and especially for the price they went for. I would just have to cash in all those airmiles to get there. I am not sure if it was the crowd there or if Africa hunts do not appeal to a large part of the population.

was there 3 weeks ago. just a family thing mostly thats were i used to live till 7 years ago....anyways........ it is the best thing ever, while i was back i only shot a springbuck and an impala...lots of people to c, there is nothing like it. im going back next year to hunt tones cause my cousin is a PH. my vote is for "hell ya":

Told me not to waste my $ and time on that...So had a hoot doin what I was doin..Dont depend on others for air carrier regs. check em yourself...Dont just bring back pics or you;ll hate yourself forever..520 must be in duplicate despite what everyone tells you.Go to your bank here and get a couple hundred rand so your atleast ready to give a tip when you get to airport,buy a coffe,etc....AVOID air emerites like the plague...And the list goes on...Going in 2007? I would say you could start planning now at a leasurely pace and have just about the right amount of time

Boomer make sure you have a GOOD case. The only grief I ever had was with the airlines crushing an aluminum gun case on the way back from a hunt over there. The scope was flattened on one of my rifles..... looked like they drove a truck over it. It wasn't South African Airlines either it was Air Canada or United that did it.

To get the capes and hides home to be mounted here was about 400USD for the pair to be tanned(which I recommend cause you know their going to pass inspection then) and the shipping from tannery to shipper + flight home about another 450USD so in total after I left and my outfitter brought em to the tannery I ended up with another $1000can. before I saw em...Sorry answering you backwards,but as I said before the difficulty is none, but I really do recommend tanning...The tannery and shipper handle everything. I mean everything. You just tell em which airport to ship to..You pay a fairly stiff taxidermist fee to get them completed though simply due to form cost cause they dont sell as many kudu,eland as say deer or elk...Get it done there,however that drives shipping crazy$$$$$'s and the big and from what I saw when I was there an african taxidermist couldnt stuff a sock...And once they deliver trash to you here just try and sue em half way round the globe
There are actually some very good taxidermists in South Africa just like there are some very bad ones in Canada. But, shipping mounted heads is very costly due to the volume/size of the crates.
I have never had my capes or hides tanned.........not that it is a bad idea.....but if your hides are properly dried, dipped and packed along with the necessary paperwork from the country of origin, ie Vet certificate, CITES, export permit.....there is usually no problem.
You have the option of shipping by air or through a cargo company (ship). Air is way faster and as blindside indicated, the cost aren't that bad if you ship the horns and hides (dried or tanned), and then have them mounted locally.

Here is a link to a good taxidermist in South Africa. They export trophies all the time and have a depot in Florida to where they ship in bulk and then redistribute to addresses in North America. I have used them before and will visit their facility in SA in a month's time. E-mail them with questions. Always better to have first-hand information.

blindside....................I have had trophies shipped 4 times from 3 different African countries and I have NEVER had problems myself. But, you can always run into problems with customs and the CWS....even when everything is done correctly. All it takes is one official who doesn't know one species from another and it won't matter whether it is tanned or dipped, dried and has the vet certificate.

Getting a gun in there is the ####s I know I still have a couple of guns there so that's what I use.
My problem is that n have a Kudu mount that I shot some years ago but I need all those permits to get the damn thing here!
