Who has hunted with the 38-40 Cartridge

It's funny, put comparable ballistics in a Glock and it's one of the best for Bear Defence, put it in a revolver and it's a powerhouse. Put it in a Lever Gun and it's marginal, put it in a Winchester Self Loader and it's useless.

Handgun chamberings come with natural shortcomings, they are by nature a ballistic compromise. Good performance for a handgun is far short of good performance for a rifle, it’s a relative consideration.

A guy would get laughed off the internet for suggesting a 35 WSL for Bear Defence or as an Elk Gun both of which the 10mm and 41 Mag are touted for.

The 38-40 prolly isnt my first choice in a Deer gun, but the .22 rimfire is not even on the horizon as a choice , unless of course I am in a survival situation and that is all that I have.
There are better marginal choices and the 25-20 comes to mind and if the owner of the 38-40 wants to play old time prospector/trapper have at 'er if they choose , I aint gonna give 'em an atta boy for trying.

Kinda surprised at you saying that Rob. I enjoy archery and black powder, and quite frankly the 38-40 would hands down beat many of those hunting tools as far as effectiveness when used within it's capabilities. Not arguing, just curious.

Handgun chamberings belong in handguns in my mind, for range use and fun I can see their point. Unless it was an heirloom I’d continue to stick those cartridges in handguns and punch paper with the levers, but all the more power to those who want to hunt them.

I never did understand the point of the 38-40. The 44-40 was probably the first world-wide cartridge.

Properly loaded it's a viable cartridge for hunting but it's close to the last thing I'd buy in a modern rifle. The 357, 41, and 44 have every advantage in a levergun you can buy in 2023.

That said, Starline makes brass and modern 10mm bullets may or may not work. I see Buffalo Bore makes a 14,000 CUP load, 180gr bullet at 1400fps. I wouldn't even hesitate to point that at a deer.

I want one now, a cannelure tool and a 180 or 200 gr Swift A Frame at ~2000 fps.

I seem to recall that Marlin made a 1894 in 38-40 in the 1980/90's.
