Who hates a .270 Winchester?

In some parts of SW Ontario there is no rifle season for big game. However you can use a rifle for coyotes, varmints etc with a bore limited to .275 cal. The .270 falls into this, bore dia-not bullet diameter. As silly as it may sound, you can use a .270 for coyotes buy not something like a .30-30 or something like a .44mag carbine ot .357mag lever gun. Although the .270 is legal for coyotes in my area most people are running .243, .22-250, .223.
When I used to go north of moose, our camp was a mixture of .270's .308 and .300 win mags. Moose shot by the guys shooting .270's were just as dead as the ones shot with a .300 mag.

It is a bit dumb but the restriction is only for hunting. For pest control on your own property you can use calibers with a larger bore.

For coyote hunting the .270 isn't my first choice but I'd rather have a rifle that I can use where I live if needed.

Both great cartridges. I do not currently own a 270 Winchester, but I have a 270WSM and 2 different 243's..

Only reason I like the WSM more is that I can really push the 180 grain woodleigh bullets fast. The 270 Winchester is perfect for the 130 grain bullets that made it famous, cause it does kill like lighting under 200 yards with them. And it is adequate with heavy 170+ grain bullets in shorter ranges. If it's not the newer high BC bullets that need a faster twist rate.

Best of both worlds would be to just buy a 6.8 Western if you want a factory rifle to shoot all the new bullets in .277 diameter that are out now.

I have had the same experience as most people, everyone I with a 270 absolutely loves it, and it's the best cartridge ever made, or the complete opposite. Generally those are the 300 win mag guys though, and everything that isn't a 300 win is inadequate. Definitely more die hards for the 300 win mag, less hate though. Most hated cartridge ever is the 6.5 Creedmoor, which makes no sense to me, it's pretty amazing, and my go to usually over my bigger, or much bigger bores. I also have never owned one that didn't shoot tiny groups with any load of H4350 from 40.0-43.0 grains of powder with literally any 130-160 grain bullet.

I never really got into the 270. Whenever i had the urge to get a new rifle, 270 was just never what came to mind. The 270 winchester was popular with my dad's hunting friends, who were competent hunters and shooters. So i respected what a 270 could do but i didnt partake myself.

I was fond of 7mm08 and 280rem, and they're similar to 270. I can't think of a cartridge I "hate".

IMHO, one case for the .280 over the .270 is the wide selection of 175 gr projectiles available for the .280 Rem.

NAA.

Too bad C-FBMI isn't still on here, he would have enjoyed this thread. He always had an irrational hatred for the .270.

I don't hate the cartridge, but so far I haven't owned one that stuck around. Probably I'm still waiting for just the right rifle to come along. I've never been able to achieve the velocities other commentators claim to get. It would be interesting to start over with some of the newer powders.

Saying the .243 is superior to the .270 is just silly.
but i had good conversations about the 270 win with why not? around coffees, hot dogs and campfires. did not like that much the cartdrige but always got good results with it but never find the attraction. but a 270 win and a 9.3x62 is a lot of power for hunting around the world i will say.

I didn’t have a 270Win due to the over-hype it received from JOC tales up until recently. Then again I wasn’t a ‘06 fan either, but low & behold I have one of each now as my mainstays.

I was always of the notion that a faster twist (1:8 or 9) to take advantage of heavier projectiles would’ve been ideal for it instead of the typical 1:10. There’s certainly no disputing it’s reputation with 130-140gr rounds.

Yet as mentioned for those that want more speed and flatter trajectory there are the .270WSM or 270Wby that can take care of that itch (not to mention others)

Here in Ont the .270Win does make sense for a lot of Hunters. It can cover off everything from Yotes to Moose easily enough. A good middle of the road choice, not too little but just enough to get it done under 350yrds. With readily avail factory ammo at everything from CTire to the local General Store in some back country town out there is also an added plus.

I’m on the fence about the/my .270Win as a whole currently.

As for the .243Win Vs .270Win debate, all I gotta say is look at the source it’s coming from…Facebook, ‘nuff said

I used a .270 a whole bunch from about 1988 to 2004, caribou in Labrador, moose, deer and bear in Alberta and British Columbia. I lost one animal with it a big brown antlered white tail north of Slave lake Alberta maybe an hour after first light on a cold November morning, he was just over a couple hundred yards away, shot him from a sitting position on a cut line and he jumped that way they do when they're hit around the heart. An hour afterwards I followed to where he had laid down and bled heavily and lost the trail afterwards, I stayed until it got too dark and came back the next day but never found him. I quit using it and eventually sold it. So who knows, bullet failure? poor shot? hit a twig ? I've got another one on the way now, a Howa carbon stalker all these years later and I'm looking forward to it just gonna run bonded bullets in this one and stick to deer with it, got lots of other rifles for bigger stuff.

Not a fan, kinda plain and don't do anything fancy. With so many good 6.5's and 7's with better ballistics and it being in the middle don't really serve a purpose for me at all.
"Better ballistics" does not apply to 90% of the hunters. The 2" less drop and 75 ft/lbs more energy at 500 yards wont make or break a kill shot on a big game animal. If it does, you shouldn't have taken that shot to begin with because your margin for error was too small to begin with.

I see things the other way. The 6.5's and 7mm's don't do anything for me for "real life" hunting scenarios, they're all within 0.007"-0.013" of each other. For PRS, NRL, F-Class purposes, then absolutely that 2" can make or break a match. But even some of the 30's don't do anything for me (pointing fingers at a 308 and 30-06....)

Ballistic coefficient means nothing under 500 yards and anyone who actually shoots at longer ranges understands that. Now 500+ yards? Thats where a higher BC bullet will shine, but again how many guys are shooting animals that far? Not very many....

Exhibit A:

270 win: 140 Berger Classic Hunter at 3000 fps, 100 yard zero, 10 mph cross wind
@ 500 yards drops 43.01", moves 14.3" wind drift holds 1543 ft/lbs of energy @ 2227 fps

6.5 PRC: 140 Berger Hybrid, 3000 fps, 100 yard zero, 10 mph cross wind
@ 500 yards drops 41.40", moves 12.3" wind drift, and holds 1670 ft/lbs of energy @ 2320 fps

Obviously at 1000 yards the 6.5 with the higher BC will out perform the 277 bullet but again, I'd like to know, say out of 1000 hunters, how many have killed and recovered an animal at that range. Id put a crisp $20 bill on the line that its less than 5%

I’ve never owned a 270 and I don’t think I will. Do I dislike the 270 no but I any say I like it either hahaha. To me it’s like an in between chambering(I don’t know why) you go 6mm or you go 7mm hahaha. I don’t own a 6mm or a 7 mm either 😎
