who here can tell me the age of my 700?

scraping the crap off a bucks skull
serial # is c6310606

on teh barrel it has:
the letters RI on it
the numbers 96 on it
the number 8 surrounded in a triangle
the letters REP in an oval cirle
and what looks to be like a crown on it


im thinking 96 because of the actual # 96 on it, but that would make it to easy :? :lol: :lol:



anybody have an idea?

all the sites I have gone to say that the first letter is the month, and the second is the year(in the serial code)

but I only have one letter

Im guessing it was made in April, but only because the C corresponds to that month, but I could be wrong :?

I go the info from a website a while back...

I'll send you my Excel file..

It's easy to date 700's built from 1980 to the present because in 1980 they started over with "A"...using all the letters of the alphabet....from '62 to '80 it's bit more complicated....'62 was "J", but they skipped "I","O","Q" and "V"...then they used these 4 letters from '76 to '79.....
and of course the months use the letters BLACKPOWDERX...."B" is January etc....

2005 is 26 years (letter Z) after 1980...I have no idea what 2006 will bring....

Nother note on Rem 700's dating....a few years back Remington would answer emails asking about dating a 700 by the serial number, which I did. Sometimes the serial number date would precede the barrel date code by as much as two years. This could only be because recievers are serial numbered when they are built and they may sit in a wharehouse until they are barrelled, the barrels are obviously stamped after they are installed in the recievers because the stamping is indexed to the reciever. So the barrel date code gives you the month and year that the barrel was installed into the receiver and then the rifle was assembled.
