Who here has taken game with a 38-55?

Any liklihood of finding one of these 38-55s around? Think I saw a Winnie on the exchange a while ago but it was pricey. I see Wholesale has all the bits to load though so ammo no prob. I had an old Winnie that had been rebarrelled to a 30-30 and thought of rebarreling it but was gonna cost me a big chunk.

There are still quite a few old Winchester 38-55's that come up for sale here and there. Get yourself a list of Canadian gun dealers and start calling them. That can turn up interesting stuff.

Not a common chambering anyways.;)

Senior, where did your 1899C get to? This isn't it is it? I found that one out in B.C. Bought it off Kelly.

To be honest I really don't remember!
I've sold about 15-20 1899s in the last 10yrs.
The only reason I never kept the C was it had a nasty bore :(

Never shot anything with a 38-55 myself, but I hunted as a youth with a fellow my age that used one a lot. It was a M94 Carbine that some 'smith had rebored to 38-55 from 30WCF. It was a very accurate levergun, as I recollect, and several muleys and at least one moose paid the price. Mention was made of the original Dominion loading being a good one, and it was. While Winchester's offering had that 255 grain SP loping along around 1350 fps, Dominion was loading the same weight bullet to 1600 FPS. It shot flatter and had considerably more oomph than the WW loadings did. The 38-55 had a reputation for accuracy, and some fine Single-shot actions show up so chambered from time to time. Regards, Eagleye.
